Covered vs Uncovered pickups

ehdwuld

A Ficus
My Epi Florentine has the covered Probuckers
And they sound great
Until I play my Gibson Studio Custom with the uncovered whatever they are double slug

The Gibson has more presence and louder and articulate
The Probuckers sound muffled

Could it be the covers?

Re: Covered vs Uncovered pickups

My guess is that it is the other difference in the guitars as well as the different pickup winds. Some people notice a difference with covers, some don't. My first guess is that the Probuckers, as pickups themselves, are not doing what you want them to do. Removing the covers will add some brightness back, but it isn't night and day.

Re: Covered vs Uncovered pickups

You are talking about 2 completely DIFFERENT pickups. The covers aren't the point.

It's like saying a Mustang goes faster than a John Deere - and it must be the tires.

You are kidding yourself by thinking this way.

Re: Covered vs Uncovered pickups

uncovered vs covered makes a difference. subtle at times but still a difference. uncovered will be brighter. double stud vs screw/stud will also make a difference probably much more than the cover. the fact that they are two different guitars is most likely the biggest contributing factor

No.

Re: Covered vs Uncovered pickups

Agreed, there are way too many differences to simply say it's the covers. Heck, the pickups alone (especially if one is double-slug) is more responsible for the difference in tone than covers vs no covers.

HOWEVER, you might actually appreciate the change removing those covers would make. Tends to open up a pickup's sound slightly...a little brighter and clearer. It may not be night and day compared to the differences between those guitars, but removing the covers is an easy way to make a change you might enjoy. Plus, it's free.
