Re: covers for singlecoils

The cover on a singlecoil is (usually) plastic, most commonly black or white. If you can´t see the actual coil, you already have one on. This is "standard" in I´d say 95%of the cases...

Re: covers for singlecoils

jeah i like the black ones.
and the sound will not change right??
who makes covers for singlecoils?
any links?

Re: covers for singlecoils

I hope it's ok to ask here, I don't know the answer to your question but... Lew mentioned in another thread that he thought that the chrome cover on tele neck pups killed the tone. Is this really the case? Because I really love that look.

Re: covers for singlecoils

The EMGs are active pickups, fully enclosed in resin. But the plastic outside is in essence also a cover, just without holes.

*EDIT* Just noticed, the link was to the S-3. These are passive, but otherwise what I said stands ;)

I think the Lace´s are the same but passive (no internal preamp), but they could be removable (can´t say for sure, I´ve never seen one "in person").

I´m not sure if there are plastic covers without holes, I can´t recall ever seeing any.

And on the topic of the Tele neck without cover (imo fits perfectly, because there are probably metal covers for strat pickups as well ), I have a feeling Lew will find this thread soon ;)

Regarding the metal cover on a Tele neck pickup: YES, I do think it ruins the tone. I like the look, but it muffles the tone because it covers up the pole pieces and also because it's often microphonic. That metal cover, IMO, is the reason you see so many 50's and 60's Teles that have been devalued by someone adding a neck humbucking pickup! IMO, an uncovered Tele neck pickup sounds ALOT better and more like the neck pickup on a Strat. I use the Fralin Blues Special neck pickup on my Tele. Lew

Re: covers for singlecoils

willman, there are wood covers on humbuckers and single coils and prodably they have an influence on sound ( warming it up, dependent on wood type )...
Take a look on this custom Mayones guitar...

The wood TYPE should make no difference whatsoever, as wood neither conducts nor shields from magnetic fields.

Cover SIZE and thickness WILL make a difference, though, as that will dictate how much farther from the strings the pickup will have to be. And raising /lowereing a pickup isone of the cheapest ways to tweak the tone ;)

Btw, nice axe :smoker:

About covers and wood types: Never tried but heard so...

About axe: $750 with Duncans in stock.. IMO the price is awesome...:D

Re: covers for singlecoils

I covered my humbuckers with those black plastic no hole covers. Looks real slick! (what the hell is under there?! :D) The dummy single coil got one too. There is no noticeable (sp?) change of sound because of the covers.
