Crap you guys you need to help me...

For the pas months I've been playing heavy metal and shred only. Only once in a blue moon I would play a Page/Clapton/Gilmour song/solo. But now I have this school band in my new school, and they don't play that stuff. They first have a test. Now don't get me wrong-playing this and this song is not my difficulty-I passed that already. But I never was in a band/test/played live/etc. I'm nervous, what song should I play? What solo? I thought about Eruption-but they probablly won't know that solo. I also thought about Speed Kills, but not only wil they not know this song, but also I'm nervous I will mess it up, I still have the Rock Solo to go. I've been playing it for 1 month and a half. I also thought about Master of Puppets or Ride the Lightning but I don't know doesn't seem right, same thing with Crazy Train. I want to play somehting and impress them, but since I never really played in front of people I'm afraid I'll mess up, but I don't want to play SLTS and look like a complete idiot. Can someone please help me pick a song/sol? Any tips? Oh and BTW I thougt about the Comfortably Numb last solo-should I do it?

Re: Crap you guys you need to help me...

Explain u'r school band. Is it a Jazz band, Pep Band, Concert Band, etc???
Whatever it is, I would play something relevant to the style of the band. Ex: If u'r "trying out" for a Jazz band, they ain't gonna give too much of a crap how well u can play Metallica-esq stuff. And actually it could go against u for fear of not being able to "hang" with the appropriate style.

Re: Crap you guys you need to help me...

riding with the king maybe?

or something from marvin taylor.. that should impress em all

Re: Crap you guys you need to help me...

My school band is not in any genre of music, it plays everything. I just want to get in, thats why I want to impress thm on first try.

Re: Crap you guys you need to help me...

seafoamer is right .. and i'll expand on that theme ... consier trying to find out who the 'judge' will be ... and if possible, what kind of music they're in to ... if you can match the style of music that the band will be doing (once you get in :) ), it will be a good audition

if you can nail the tone and feeling of 'comfortably numb', it might really set you apart from the guys who just go in there and wank a shred solo ... if the judge is about 40, and not a weenie, he'll INSTANTLY know 'eruption' and you'll be in like flynn :D

just make sure you play something that is only about 80% of your total ability ... you dont wnat to be straining at the limits of your skill to get it right ... you want to be able to play it with total confidence

have fun - good luck

Re: Crap you guys you need to help me...

I'd add that a school band situation is not about trying to "impress" people as much as playing as an ensemble ... the ability to read well, support others and understand overall musicianship are the key factors

and, specifically on the guitar, your chord playing and rhythm skills will be more important than your soloing ablility

Re: Crap you guys you need to help me...

play "always with me, always with you" by satch!!!

:)

dont go for the metal stuff cause that'll only impress people like your friends, and people who dont play. for older people it'd be best to play a more melodic, in control type thing. NO WANKFEST!!

polkas? bluegrass? baroque? ragas? death metal? reggae? gregorian chants? klezmer?

wow, that's one school band i'd love to see ... :D

seriously, though - be ready to show you can play clean major, and minor chords with upper voices (7ths, 9ths, 11ths) and also be familiar with chords using a b5

good luck

Re: Crap you guys you need to help me...

just be comfortable with other musicians - fit around whatever else is going on

id rather have 3 mates who can half-play than 3 up-their-own-arse virtuosos

Thats the most important..Are you sure you can play eruption after only being playing for 11 months??
And wheres those sound clips

Butbe sure that whatever song/solo you are going to do that you can play it with relative ease and no mess ups, You'll know that you can play it if when your practising you are very relaxed and confindent while playing whatever your playing..

Good luck,,

And try not to over wank the fretboard, play some rhythm also as for the mostpart you'll probobly be playing rhythm..
