Re: Crate GFX 65 Upgrade?

not to be a jerk, but that would be like putting up a new chandelier in a haunted house. not that thats a really terrible amp or anything, it just wouldn't really do much for the fact that it's still solid state, as i'm assuming it is. Save the money and go tube.

take it from a guy who just went tube, it's worth it.

Re: Crate GFX 65 Upgrade?

yes i agree 100% but for now i can't afford to get a new amp with tubes
but i do have a Damage Control Solid Metal pedal which uses 2 preamp tubes
and i like the tones i can get from it going into the Crates input
i think that a new celestion would make my tone even better

Re: Crate GFX 65 Upgrade?

if you dig the difference then go for it! if you ever upgrade to a higher end amp you'll already have an amazing speaker to put in it.

keep in mind that for the price of a vintage 30 you could get a valve jr head. then sell your crate, add some more money and get the matching cab.

Re: Crate GFX 65 Upgrade?

why not go WGS? they are a smaller U.S. made alternative that uses the same materials that celestion uses and puts them together here. What you get is a exact clone of a vintage 30 for half the price. and its made in USA not China...

Here they are on ebay.

Re: Crate GFX 65 Upgrade?

very cool these WGS look like the best speakers money can buy haha
prices are great even after shipping thanks for the link :D

i don't think it's letting all the tone thru maybe it's muddy sounding
the speaker is pretty **** old cause i had the amp since the early 90's
i think this old speaker is robbing tone

Wow! I'm surprised the amp is still going. I always thought those amps were essentially disposable. I had one - loved the amp - but it didn't last 4 years. The circuit board connections started coming loose and it became unreliable. I wish I still had mine.

Anyway, if yours is still working, I would change out the speaker, simply because you could always use it in another setup later.

Re: Crate GFX 65 Upgrade?

dude, I have a GT1200H with an Avatar 212 with vintage 30's. it sounds awesome. Much better than the 412 I had (matched with a GFX1200H). I say DO IT!!!

Re: Crate GFX 65 Upgrade?

If you have to keep this amp awhile, I'd recommend putting in a new speaker. You will have three bennies: First, the amp might be more fun to play because it will have more dynamics. Next, the improved speaker will make the effects sound clearner. Lastly, As already posted, get a good speaker and keep it for your next amp.

I've got an old GLX-65-with the lighted dashboard. I bouhgt it cause it was all I could afford at the time. After awhile, I became very unhappy with the sound-it was muffled on any channel and the onboard or loop effects were very weak and indistinct.

Talked w/ the salesman and he sent me back to talk w/ the repair man [He recently moved his store from mid city to its current location-less than a quarter mile from our GC, and he is very satisfied w the new location ]. The repaiman compared the stock speaker to the aftermarket speakers. He suggested I try a couple of speakers in the amp, and finally settled on an Emminence.

As the speaker broke in, the amp's character changed for the better. The clean now has some deph. THe crunch channel now has some heartfelt aggression instead of muddy slop. Its now a fun amp to play and I am keeping it for a awhile longer. Yeah, its an old ss crate and it sounds good enough for company to play.

Re: Crate GFX 65 Upgrade?

ha i think i had this amp since 1997
i'm sure a new speaker should make a good tone difference

almost got enough money for one of those 12" Veteran 30's :)
