Re: crazy ebay

Yeah.....a while back, I saw a mint 1960 on the Gruhn site. Asking price.......$275,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:chairfall I remember back in the mid 90's when I could have bought Pat Travers' '60 for a hair over $20,000 at Thoroughbred in Tampa. Didn't have the money then, but if somebody made me an offer like that today, oh man. Remember back when only the '59's and original Explorers and 12 fret Martin D45's sold for stupid money? now you have '57 goldtops going for $100k and mint '54 Strat for $70k:banana:

Re: crazy ebay

yeah.....i have one that looks almost exactly like that.......except without all the dings and green stuff on the metal......and i only paid $3600 for mine...:laugh2:

Re: crazy ebay

DANG!!!!!:eek13: I thought that the Bigsby equipped models were supposed to be worth less. This is getting crazy:laugh2:

Re: crazy ebay

I just threw up a little bit in my mouth...Why would you pay that much for anything? except maybe a house?

Re: crazy ebay

People with STUPID amounts of money who buy one just to say they have them. Heard a rumor in the 80s that japanese collectors were buying up all the early Gibsons, Fenders, Marshalls and muscle cars and just socking them away in storage because they believed they were going to be worth lotsa money. I knew a girl who sold a car to one and that's what he told her.

If that's true, I guess they were right and they're laughing at fools who pay this money now, LOL. Ebay sure has helped inflate prices of things as well. Before you could only sell locally and for the price you asked. Now you can auction it and people get into bidding wars. If we didn't have the crash of the early 2000s, can you imagine what things would be going for now?

Re: crazy ebay

I read that a while back, a Japanese fellow offered Billy Gibbons $500K for Pearly and was turned down flat. With Blackie going for $1m, and arguably that not even being the most desireable Clapton guitar (to wit, NOT being the long lost '60 Beano Burst) AND not demanding the automatic up to $200K premium that a regular Burst gets over a regular '57 Strat, can you imagine what a Burst with a famous provenance would go for now? I wonder how much Gary Moore got for Peter Green's guitar? Even though Green is UNFORTUNATELY not all that famous outside of the guitar world and the guitar is pretty ragged out, it had to go for some long "green".<-----insert bad pun here.:laugh2: Imagine if Pearly, Page's #1 or Duane's Darkburst came on the market!!!!!!!!:eek13: :yell:

Re: crazy ebay

With celebrity guitars reaching ridiculous numbers, a thought popped into my head yesterday, when I was watching the documentary on Pantera.
Apparently, Edward Van Halen laid his VH II black/yellow striped guitar in Dime's coffin, as a tribute to a fellow guitarist. I know it's sick to think about, but I hope Dime's grave is secure, because Ed's black/yellow guitar is practically a holy grail, and I wouldn't put it past someone to try and retrieve it. Sad to say that's the world we live in.

Re: crazy ebay

Even if all of the top 35 posters on this board, BTW I dont even know who they are so this is not a slam, pooled their money they couldnt afford it. :)

It is a beautiful example isn't it.

In reply to the above post, (sung to a Pink Floyd melody line) ".... and the worms ate into the wood...." ;)

They are, but look at how unbelievably clean that one is.... the sunburst is still quite intact, doesn´t look to be dinged up...

And +1 to Jonesey on the issue Dime´s grave containing THE Holy Grail of CHarvels presents...:blackeye:

Re: crazy ebay

It is a strange world but hey people can pay that much if they want. To me a guitar is still a guitar no matter what the cost. Sure you can get expensive ones, but how many custom shop Gibsons, PRSs, Jacksons, Deans, Fenders etc could you get for £250K???

Is there anything special about these old guitars apart from whoever played them, the old wood, the age, the brand, build etc compared with guitars available today? I understand the collectability though, to me it may not be worth as much, but there are some people who take it seriously and theres the market.
