Crazy Wiring Idea

Hey folks,

I just bought an Aria Pro II Cardinal Series (amazing guitar I've wanted for years) and love the pickups and current electronics but would love to add one or two little things to really push the guitar into perfection territory. The guitar currently has independant volume and tone for each humbucker (2) and 2 mini switches (one coil cut and one phase (reversal?)). I would like to consolidate the volume and tone controls to the front two knobs with push pulls and use the back two for EMG accessory circuits. I suppose the catch is that I want the RPC (resonant peak control) to work for the neck pickup only and the AB (afterburner to work only with the bridge pickup. Can this be done? Can anyone dream up a wiring diagram for this? Dont worry about the battery I'm putting in a separate battery box because there wont be any space left with the push pulls and the circuit boards on the accessories. It also works out well because I have to replace the output jack anyway. Eh?

Re: Crazy Wiring Idea

I'm 99% sure this could be done without too much trouble. Unfortunately, I'm going out for the day, so for now, I can't do a diagram. If no one else responds today, I'll do one either tonight or sometime tomorrow. At any rate, it should be quite possible, afaik.

Re: Crazy Wiring Idea

There's one main thing you need to be concerned with: if both of those devices have "active" outputs, you may not want to tie them together, for the same reason you don't want to use a "Y" cable to convert stereo to mono. If one output is going positive while the other goes negative, you'll have a virtual short across your power supply. (A battery, in this case.)

You could blow an output. I'ld check with the EMG folks on that one.

Re: Crazy Wiring Idea

Hmm....never thought of that. I was thinking about ditching the RPC anyway but now it makes more sense. Does anyone know of a push/pull pot I could use for both volume and tone? Is such a device manufactured?

Re: Crazy Wiring Idea

Stew-Mac and others make dual-concentric controls, if thats what you mean. You can't really have volume and tone with one knob. (Well - you could, but it would be somewhat useless.)

Re: Crazy Wiring Idea

I mean something like having the a regular volume control in the down position, be able to pull the knob to the up position and use it a regular tone control. The reasons behind this are purely cosmetic as the knobs currently on the guitar really work well and having to replace one with two concentric knobs would look pretty stupid. I guess I just have to choose which pickup I want to remove the tone control from if I want to put in the Afterburner.

Re: Crazy Wiring Idea

You could do it, but it would be a stretch. There are several car stereos that use a pot that pulls out to perform one function, and back in for another. Balance and fader controls on Honda's are often done this way. The thing is, they won't be "guitar" values. You could adapt something using op-amp buffers if you knew some electronics, or knew someone that did . . .
