Crunchy Germanium. .

I want something to make my clean amps sound thick and crunchy, not the usual metal grind, but more of a granola kind of sound.

I kind of like the sound of a Night Train 50 on thick or girth or whatever, but really don't want to spend that sort of money.

Any easy way to get that sound?

the fruits and nuts tone, youll find that tone on the granola left coast in california, seasoned with patchoula :banana:

You want a muff.

I've used a Basic Audio Foxey Lady before and I think that'd be a great place to start, as it's a more distortion-esque fuzz. Alternatively, I continue to use a Tri/Ram of the same maker that's fantastic.

If that's a little expensive, a BAT Pharaoh might be a good pick. There's one for sale on another forum right now for $110. It's also a bit more versatile (from what I've heard) than the two listed above in that it can do low gain better.

I realize that none of these are germanium, but having owned a few nice germanium fuzzes, muffs are great, without any of the worries that come with using germanium transistors. Unless you're specifically after a GE fuzz face or tone bender sound (or some of the more obscure germanium fuzzes of the 60's) then you don't need to worry about germanium v. silicon.

I thought the Pharoah was smooth fuzz. I am wanting something gritty. .

Jester13, do you like your Big Muff Geranium 4? What amp do you play it into??

I like the sound of the 65Amps Colour Boost, but it seems to be discontinued. .

I would say a Tonebender (MKII or MK1.5) is more gritty then a Big Muff and its variants heck I think alot of fuzzes are more gritty especially 60s ones and more modern recreations have more low end (like a BOSS FZ-2). Can you give any reference to the kind of sound because when I think thick and gritty at the same time something like the Blue Cheer - Summertime Blues or early Zeppelin come to mind. I personally found the Germ 4 too overdrivey unless getting more of a started dying amp sound and not thick enough or fuzzy enough but I play clean amps and single coils.
