cry baby or vox clyde mccoy?

Re: cry baby or vox clyde mccoy?

If you're looking at high gain wah, don't rule out the Vox V847. Personally I find it to be a bit nicer sounding than the Clyde McCoy; the Clyde's sweep is a little lower in frequency.

As for the Cry Baby, the sweep isn't as wide (or even as sweet) as a Vox wah is, but I think it still cuts and sounds pretty good. I'm still deciding between my Cry Baby From Hell and my V847. Go to a music store if you can and try a bunch out. If you can't, you might want to take a look at Dimebag Darrell's signature wah, the Cry Baby From Hell. It's VERY adjustable and has many great wah tones within.

Then again, Hendrix used the Cylde if I'm not mistaken.

I think he went through a couple of types, as with Fuzz's too, but can't say 100%, because so much is always hearsay.

My recommendation for the Dunlop comes from the fact it's built like a concrete out-house! It's never let me down and I think sounds good!

Pictures I've seen showed Hendrix using the Clyde McCoy picture wah...Jimi put tape over the photo on the bottom of his pedal to cover up that...

i'm afraid that one one these days i'll open a can of beans and dimebag darrell's picture will pop out :)
i'm not looking into spending alot of money, so i'll make sure i check out the v847. cheers

Re: cry baby or vox clyde mccoy?

I like Voxs more then CB models... but for high gain rock solos, I say go for an original CB...

I don't know how it is over there, but here in Canada I checked out the price of a Vox V847 and it was almost as much as the Cry Baby From Hell. That said, I've noticed that in the US the price for the Vox is a hell of a lot lower and about on par with an original Cry Baby, so maybe you've got the same luck as they do.

Re: cry baby or vox clyde mccoy?

I use a Crybaby now, but am unhappy with it's background hiss when engaged. I'm not sure if that's standard with all wahs, but I know it's less vs. the Vox 847. The Clyde is quite a bit more, so I'd steer you towards the vox.

Re: cry baby or vox clyde mccoy?

Is Vox really any better than Crybaby at this point now that they are both produceds by Dunlop? I mean, it's not like they are Voxes and Crybabies from the 60's...

Sorry I can't add anything, my standard Crybaby (90's) is better than my 847 for high gain, but both fall far short of the tone in my head. The ones I'd like to try when I finally get around to it are the Crybaby from Hell, Wylde Wah, Teese Wizard Wah and Morley Tremonti Wah.

There are a ton of different Dunlop CB models these days, but I still much prefer the Vox 847 over the CBs in the same price range...Basically it's a combination of the right inductor, pot, cap types,etc..to get the correct vocal sweep...The boutique whas do that, but most of the mass produced ones don't!

Re: cry baby or vox clyde mccoy?

I bought a Vox 847 with the Fulltone TB mod for around $80 on a forum, the gear page I think. It is so much better than my roomie's standard Crybaby. The sweep is wider and the tone is just better, and no tone suckage when off, which his Crybaby seems to do pretty bad, but I guess you could mod the Crybaby also.

Yeah it's weird. Whenever I see a pic of Hendrix and the floor in front it's a fuzz face and a vox wah, yet JD always goes on about how Hendrix used a cry baby and there's even a Hendrix line of Cry baby pedals. What's the deal here? And didn't Dunlop steal the circuit for their crybaby from the clyde wah?

Some history clarification needed here!!! Sorry for the hijack.

Dunlop bought the rights to the name Crybaby (along with Uni-Vibe, MXR, Dallas-Arbiter/Fuzz Face, Heil, Rockman, et al.) and I'm probably forgetting some.
