Cubase and VST plug-ins

I found a website with pages and pages of free VST and VSTI plugins so naturally I went overboard. My question is would cubase run better/faster WITHOUT a ton of plug-ins installed even when not being used? Or would I be better off only installing the ones I'll always use?

You can install them all. If Cubase is anything like Reaper, you call up the ones you want at that time. They're basically just files you open so until you open them you don't need to worry about whether it'll run faster or not.

If possible, could you share this site?

Re: Cubase and VST plug-ins

Plug-ins only consume CPU and or virtual RAM capacity whilst in use. Your DAW should have a usage meter somewhere in the corner, displaying precisely this statistic.

There is an Australian site that offers a huge range of superb low price and freeware plug-ins. Unfortunately, for me, they are Windows only.

Not sure if Pro Tools fixed that with the latest version but everything up 'til and including 11 loaded *all* plugins into RAM at startup.

Re: Cubase and VST plug-ins

To keep 'em on tap and ready to go... but it does hinder your system.

Personally speaking, I prefer to keep my workflow as lean as possible, and only keep the VSTs in that I know and love and use... If I try one out and don't like, I pull it, so that it's a) not cluttering up my menus, and b) not slowing down the program just loading to start. I'll give a VST a few sessions to earn it's place, but if I consistently find something else works better, it's gone.

I prefer the method of everyone else where you call up the VST when needed, not always ready to go.

Re: Cubase and VST plug-ins

The more pug-ins you have, the longer it takes to scroll through menus... and not all free stuff is stable. Try to use the plug-ins that have the highest internal bit processing too.

Re: Cubase and VST plug-ins

Cheers guys. I only asked because lately my cubase has been running slower than normal. It can take a while to open cubase and create a new project and sometimes lags when I hit play or pause or whatever among other small things like that.

Re: Cubase and VST plug-ins

*Loading* more slowly is likely because of either a lot of VSTs loading, or a particularly large VSTi loading... Watch the load screen, see if it pauses for a while on one particular VST.

As for lagging when you press play... do you have a lot of tracks in the project, with each a host of VSTs on it? Might be time to try freezing the tracks, free up some CPU. Turn on your CPU meter, see what's going on.

That's what I was going to say. I try to record off my amps and such, but sometimes a VST sounds better. Or if it's a keyboard part, I only have a midi controller so I can't record off of them.

Re: Cubase and VST plug-ins

Could be time for some general computer housekeeping. Archive your projects. Defrag your hard drive(s).

Apple users will be familiar with programs such as Memory Clean. This app frees up RAM capacity by identifying memory hogging software and clearing unnecessarily cached data.

If you record guitar parts via Guitar Rig, Amplitude or POD Farm style amp modelling plug-ins, consider consolidating the completed guitar part(s) to a regular audio track. This done, remove the plug-in. See whether this reduces CPU/HDD load.

If your computer is becoming slow in almost all applications, it could have a temperature management issue. Check and clean all air vents, cooling fans and remove any fluff from heatsinks.

Re: Cubase and VST plug-ins

Once you have the track where you like it (or can live with it), save, bounce that track down, and save w a new name.
The bounced track will use up a lot less processing.
