Custom 5 at LP bridge?

Has anybody put a custom 5 (SH 14) at the bridge on a Les Paul? I am thinking about putting one on mine and a 59 on the neck mainly for Rock and Blues. Any comments? I would appreciate it.

I have that exact combo.

It works well for rock and blues.. although.. what kind of rock are we talking here? I play plenty of metal and sometimes I need the output.. but when playing like.. lower gain or clean the C5 gets a bit harsh or fizzy.. so you might want a 59 set instead.

I mostly play Classic Rock with my LP. I don't shred that much, If I do, I'll use my SG with P90s. I'm thinking about splitting the 59 and the C5 with two push/pull pots too. Does your Epi LP have a mahogany body and rosewood fretboard?

It's one of the best LP combos IMO, and probably my favorite. Think of the C5 as the 59 Hot. Since LP's already have nice mids, the C5 doesn't really inject too much of it's own. What you'll get is nice tight bouncy lows and natural sounding highs. For years, I've had C5/59 in LP's and McCartys, and even though I've used other combos, I still come back to that combo as a favorite.
It's good for blues, rock, and metal. On my Goldtop, I even have pullup tone pots, and all those positions are very nice. I order them in nickel 4 lead.
Out of all the bridge humbuckers for LP's, I like the C5, CC, Seth, and Custom Shop Brobucker the most. If you buy a Brobucker, request it to be potted, and it'll handle highgain better. All of them are superb in a LP.

In my LP, I currently have a c5 and a jazz (bridge version) in my neck position. That is a great combo for all kinds of styles.. mainly rock of course :D
I have no problem getting mids because my amp and speakers get what I need.
The C5 is somewhat 'transparent' like the 59.

Re: Custom 5 at LP bridge?

I got curious about the C5 not too long ago so I decided to swap the mag in my CC with an A5. First impression, the mids were still there. The so called scoop (which I don't hear) is from the lows and highs coming up as a result of the A5 magnet. I've got it and a Jazz neck in my Epi LP. Sounds fantastic.

Re: Custom 5 at LP bridge?

I have a C5 in an LP like guitar. I love it. I play clean a lot. The C5 does country clean great. I also play blues and classic rock (to 80's rock) and it does an excellent job for me. A lot of the distortion element is the amp for metal, at least to me.

It is not the best example, but this is the C5 in a gain situation. The rhythm tone, not the lead tone here.

Re: Custom 5 at LP bridge?

Best combo for a LP hands down.

I have always found the 59 bridge to be lacking somewhat, and I could never get it balanced right with the 59 neck, despite the calibration. I feel like the output difference is not enough.

The Custom5 works perfect with the 59 neck.

And the mids aren't scooped. Theyre just neutral. Which is good. YOu dont need any more mids on an LP.

Re: Custom 5 at LP bridge?

Thanks! Guys. You're getting me excited. May be I'll get both of them with 4 conductor wires and do some experiment with the push/pull pots. Should I order them with covers? I understand they will be vacuum waxed if they're ordered that way. Wonder how that will affect the tone.

Re: Custom 5 at LP bridge?

Definitely order them with factory nickel covers. They never squeal when they're sent from the factory that way.

Later on, if you decide to add pullup tonepots to your guitar, just know that you will have to remove that metal grounding plate inside, and possibly use a dremel tool to thin out the cavity a bit, so the nuts will go on the pot shafts. It's more work than anticipated, but the final result is cool.

Re: Custom 5 at LP bridge?

Is it because of that extra piece of wood on top of the Les Paul that requires extra work or a long shaft push/pull pot?

Re: Custom 5 at LP bridge?

The thickness of the wood (especially the wood where the two pots closer to the strings are) and the plate make the distance too great for a short shaft pot.

Re: Custom 5 at LP bridge?

I have a 59 and c5 in my explorer.. Love it!! I did change the mag to a C4 to round off some lows, but your maple cap should balance that out..

Re: Custom 5 at LP bridge?

I play a kind of old fashioned Bluesrock. The C5 didnt do it for me, i went to a overwound Paf which is a lot thicker in the mid and warmer too. But i works well with an overdriven Marshall (EL34) though i dont like it thru Fenders (6L6).

Re: Custom 5 at LP bridge?

I don't expect to use distortion a lot but I'll probably overdrive the amp quite a bit. Is the C5 good for this? Also what kind of amp will it fit well? Some of you brothers mentioned scoop, and I have no clue what it is since I'm from the old school. I just play the guitar and try to tweak to the sound I like. Can somebody help me on this one?

Scoop is where the lows and highs are boosted and the mids pulled back. 80s metal had alot of mids. Metallica's aggressive in your face tone comes from scooping the mids. If you look at the tone chart for the C5, the eq looks like the mids and lows are high. The prevous poster was trying to say, (I agree) that you shouldnt worry, there is still plenty of mids to get about any tone you want..

It cleans up nice, it does great for classic rock, 80s metal if you dial up the mids on your amp, and does metal great too!!

Re: Custom 5 at LP bridge?

I am really happy with my current C5/LP combo. It really works well with my Plexitone pedal too. The distortion is very 'musical' and it has enough power to get some good gain. It also cleans up very nicely.
