Custom 5/Distortion magnet swap

Hey Gents,

So, I've been reading up on magnet swaps lately and, since I have an extra Distortion lying around, I thought about experimenting with the two. I had a Distortion in the bridge of my strat but I found it was too high output and compressed for my liking at the moment. For any kind of metal tho, I love it! I just need something a little more versatile for the band I'm in at the moment. I recently put a Custom 5 in and although I like the overall tone and the way it sounds clean, it seems a bit too tame output wise and the bass it a bit too prominent, making it not as tight as I am used to.

The tone I'm after is PAF-ish but can also sound good with some high gain behind it and be able to push the amp a little less than a Distortion does, but still clean up well. I liked the output and versatility of the JB I had but it was a little too nasally for my liking. So maybe something along the lines of a more balanced JB I would say.

Do you guys think I should put the ceramic magnet of the Distortion into the Custom 5, or put the Custom 5 magnet into the Distortion? Also, I've read that magnets are not exactly the same among different models of humbuckers, ie. bigger/smaller, etc. Will these magnets swapped into the other pickup make it sound just like a different model? For example, will swapping in the ceramic of the Distortion make the Custom 5 sound just like a Custom? Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, swapping the magnets will almost get you a Custom. The only difference is the magnet is double thick rather than regular thickness. A5 sounds good in the Distortion too.
