I just wanted to share my experience with this pickup.
I have been a very loyal Distortion user for years, and really for me it's the best all around pickup for distorted tones. I have tried the Black Winter (didn't like it at all, was like a grainy version of the Distortion, lacking all the smoothness the DD has).
I'm also the kind of guy who used to change pickups almost more often than string sets............
This, until I discovered the Custom 5. After a few months, I can't praise these pickups enough ....... They have unbelievable clarity and articulation for high gain, and God they are tight for metal..........
Something I had never sound in any other SD pick up is this dry character that the C5 has. Funnily enough, the Custom lasted 2 rehearsals in my guitar before it went away, and really never liked the Custom Custom either, but there's something about the C5 that makes it different:.
- It pushes, meaning that it's not high gain, but apparently it pushes the right frequencies, that low-mid honk that hits you in the chest. It gets along pretty well with my Blackstar HT-Dual dist pedal.
- It's tight and dry, almost like an EMG81, so it makes it very clean under heavy distortion, without any of that fizz that high gain pickups normally have. Not sure if the term "clean distortion" makes any sense, but this is really what comes to my mind.
- I can turn the gain up and it doesn't get muddy
- When played clean, it certainly has more chime that your regular 59'. Split , it gets really crystal clear.....
I might have found my new favourite pickup for metal !
