Have any of you guys tried or do you use a C5 for Metal ? Im wanting to try something new. I allready use a Custom, JB, DD, and a Deamon all with great results for that 80s & 90s Metal tone. I play through a 120wtt 3ch Crate 1/2 stack, no effects. The guitar is a single hum Fender Strat, rosewod fretboard. Any feedback would be great, thanks guys.

Re: Custom 5 for METAL ?

Buy a better amp first. ;)

I think the Custom 5 has enough gain for metal. It's not over the top like a Custom or JB, but it'll still get the job done.

Re: Custom 5 for METAL ?

I used my Custom 5 when I was in a metal band, and it worked beautifully. However, most of the gain came from my amp.

Hey imrichbeyotch, your a arrogant little SOB arnt you, who are you to say my amp isent good enough. I dont know what you do for a liveing but i have a ex wife, 13 year old daughter, house and truck payments so any gear i get is not what i can afford but what i want. All i can say is i like the results i get from my gear. By the way, what are you playing through, thats what i thought. If you want to stay in good around here you might want to watch who you tick off !

Re: Custom 5 for METAL ?

Hi Racer,

You should do well with the C-5. I used the Custom (currently) and JB in the past. The JB to my ears is warmer....in fact I think I may be done with ceramic magnet loaded pickups.......I just hear something I don't like.
I will say that i get more growl with the JB and Custom, not to mention my Rio BBQ for that matter.

The C-5 is more open and seems to give full control of the amp, which is nice. It doesn't have the thick mids of the others, and I might say it is more vintage.

I've gigged a few times using the C-5 and had no issues with high gain or metal.

I have no clue as of what to make of this reply. You seem to have taken my post completely opposite the way I meant it to be. I meant nothing bad against you. All I am saying is that all of the experiences I have ever had with Crate amps have been bad ones. I remember playing in a band with another guitarist who used one of their halfstacks. When the whole band played together, all I could hear was noise coming from that damn thing.

What I really meant to say was that a pickup change would make a very miniscule difference with an amp like that. (BTW did you even see the damn smiley I used ;) to indicate it was just in good fun?)

I apologize that you misinterpreted my post. If you still feel pissed about....whatever it was you were pissed about, then too damn bad. I've got more important things to worry about.

Yikes! Someone had a little too much Starbucks today?

Honestly, I had a Crate 4x12 cab that was rated at somewhere between 150 and 100 watts. I blew the speakers in it twice. So, I said screw it and bought a Marshall cab instead.

Some of their combos sound nice, actually.

Re: Custom 5 for METAL ?

I hear ya , man!!!!! Try the C-5 for metal, you will LOVE it! I have a couple in some Les Pauls and they scream, you will not be dissapointed.

Re: Custom 5 for METAL ?

How would a custom custom do for metal I wonder? I like the extra mids I see in the tone chart. Middy pickups always seem to work well for me.

Re: Custom 5 for METAL ?

I think that the pup would give you lots of bass response and a more scooped tone than the other pups you listed. I think that the question I would ask is, does the rest of your rig sound perfect with other guitars? I find that most of tone really comes from the Amp and even though pickups can make a difference in the sound of a guitar for sure, it is a more subtle change. No matter what I do, my fender amp with a tubescreamer still sounds like an amp for classic rock and great cleans. I can pump up the volume and gain, and it still doesn't sound like metallica you know. if I threw EMG pickups into my guitar it would only make me sound 1% more like metallica. But if I sold my amp and bought a marshall, it would probably make me sound 90% more like metallica.

For 80's metal tone I would stick to the JB. Besides the fact that its what EVERYONE used, I think that it's mid focused softer bottom tone really fits. In the 90's however it seemed that people really discovered bass. For that tone, I think that a C5 might give you a bit more of what you are looking for.

Re: Custom 5 for METAL ?

OK, everyone simmer down. There's enough prosac on the planet for everyone.

I get killer metal tones from the C-5, no worries there.

Re: Custom 5 for METAL ?

I have a C5 in a shcecter C1+ and a Blues in an Ibanez rg560. The c5 is open and good for raw metal stuff/alternative. Alot of bass, thin highs lacking mids. But the best so far for my tastes. The blues is my second favorite, great for leads/ not as open as the c5 cuts a little better, not as much bass as the c5 sounds a little like a crybaby frequency, very vocal but the least gain ive tried so far. The blues sounds better in my schecter than in the ibanez.

Marijuana - it's nature's prozac! :smoker: :burnout:

And at risk of RACERX hopping in his tie-fighter and coming after me, the C5 sounds great for metal thru my Boogie amp and sounds like crap thru my buddies "less expensive" amp.

Re: Custom 5 for METAL ?

Robert S. Come see my band June 19 Sat. night at THE BULLFROG and tell me if the C5 is any good with my boogie setup?? If you get a chance. I wonder if it is tooo thin on the highs. Someone said to try an alnico 4 magnet? Know anything about Alnico 4s?
