Custom 5 question

How well does it clean up when you roll off the guitar volume? I'd be running through a high gain head and occasionally need to quickly clean up a bit (not clean channel clean of course) before cranking back into a riff or solo or whatever. Just curious as I know some pups are better at this than others.

Re: Custom 5 question

i think it works pretty **** well, at least with 500k pots. never tried it with anything lower

Re: Custom 5 question

It's OK, but lower output pickups do it better (e.g. Screamin Demon, Jazz, 59). IMHO, the C5 sounds a bit muffled and weak when rolling down.

Re: Custom 5 question

i had a treble bypass on the guitar i was speaking of, so that wasnt an issue. i could see how it could be on a guitar with out it but with it, i thought it cleaned up great

Re: Custom 5 question

There's been a lot of posts from guys who think a C5 is very good clean; yes, not quite as good as a PAF, but better than the average high output PU. BTW, I use 250K's with my C5's and like the tone much better; more midrange punch with just enough bite.

250k pots with a C5?

Just curious, but what's your rig and band makeup?

Re: Custom 5 question

I use the C5 through my 5153 as well as my H&K Edition Tube. Both can get pretty high gain. The C5 cleans up very well for me, does not muddy up at all. I have one in my alder strat with a 500k volume & tone pot w/o any treble bleed. On channel 3 of my 5153 it cleans up to a nice crunch. On channel 2 it cleans up very well, almost completely.

Re: Custom 5 question

I thought the C5 worked very nicely clean. That, and the Jazz I had in the neck were a great clean combo.

Re: Custom 5 question

I lower the height of my c5, so it cleans up better,

lowering the height equals lowering the output, and decreasing string pull, more sustain,

but even with the height lowered, the c5 has enough power to sound powerful when I increase the guitars volume,

So its ok for me, :)

Chicago blues & classic rock thru a Marshall TSL, DSL, or a Blues Cube. There's usually another guitarist with me. I like a warm, full bridge and I need 250K's on A5 bridge PU's to get that. A quirk of mine.

Re: Custom 5 question

Thanks for the insights all. I'm going to be running mine with a CTS 300K audio taper vol pot (500k tone) and through a Mark IV primarily. I'm hoping/thinking the 300K pot will help tame some of the brightness as well.

Good to know it cleans up decent as that is important (well, obviously since I started the thread on it... :-)). Thanks again!

Re: Custom 5 question

Thinking about pots & pickups... I've come full circle with the C5... in a particular PRS CU22 with a very, VERY thin bridge pos.
I have been using a PG An8 for the last several months... It has fattened things up a bit, but I'm still not satisfied.
The CC was to muddy, the regular PG to Bright. I can't see using 250K pots like Blueman, because I do want some Treble Chime...
But I am so tired of switching pickups and magnets...
I have a Jazz in the neck and it sounds beautiful no matter what crazy mods I throw at it.
So.... I guess... next is trying a 300K pot on the Bridge pickup no matter what pickup is in there.

What would really be crazy insane... Is if all I had to do was use a 300K pot with my original PG... instead of trying every pickup and magnet in the world!

Thanks for the post JIG...
