seems both are of the slightly beefed up PAF variety.... im buying an edwards es-335 that has the custom 5 stock..... do you think it will be good enough, or should i just pre-order one of those gibson 57's to swap out with?

Welcome aboard!

For a vintage tone, a '57 will be more accurate, but if you're playing classic rock and Chicago blues like I do, you might like a C5 best. If it's a little bright or scooped for you, put in an A8 magnet, which will make it a C8, a very popular PU here. Another great option for warmth is an unoriented A5 magnet in your C5, giving it more mids and less treble, and a lot of dynamics (overwound, but with more of a vintage feel).

We get our magnets from Addiction FX on eBay, big assortment and low prices. There's a video on Project Guitar.com that shows how to swap magents, which only takes a few minutes.

I think you have to hear your original pickup first!
The pickup change is a tuning of your guitar, who really knows how it will sound in your rig, with your hands, in your band mix?
Only playing a lot with a guitar you will have the elements to understand what you really need.

+1

Play it first and see how you like it. Then worry about any changes you may want to make...mag swaps first, then new pups.
