Custom 5 with Alnico 8 Magnet

How would a swap to an Alnico 8 magnet affect the gain and the tone of an SH-14 Custom 5? Would an Alnico II benefit from an Alnico V magnet swapped into it? Is an SH-14 Custom 5 suited to a Korina bodied Epiphone Explorer? Has anyone experimented with these particular combinations? Thanks.

I have a Custom 5 in a Korina guitar and it is a great match, Korina has mids so it helps to fill out the Custom 5. I would avoid putting a Custom 8 in Korina as the C8 has a lot of mids and in a Korina guitar it could be to much. If the guitar is not real Korina then it is a crap shoot. These comments are about my particular guitar, they all sound different.

This all depends on what tones you want, and your gear. What works for one guy may not work for another. For instance, I like C8's in an LP, SG, and 335, with 250K pots; crunch & punch. For some guys that's too warm.

Best way to do it, is to listen to what your guitar sounds like with high-quality PU's. If the tone isn't quite what you want, choose a magnet that'll move you in the right direction. It's really done on a case-by-case basis.
