Re: Custom 8 in 2016....
They were talked about a lot when A8's were still fairly new here, Customs being one of best PU's to put an A8 in. Now the word's out and many people have them. They're still talked about and recommended here. Maybe you're missing some of those threads.
When Addiction FX became the main forum magnet supplier (after Wymore left), I was the first one here to get UOA5's from him, and the first PU I put one in was a C5. It's been my favorite Custom variant ever since. I had previously put A8's in all my C5's, CC's, Customs, and 498T's, and have since put UOA5's in most of those. I like their A2-type feel and texture, and the dynamics that come from a more moderate output. For me, the sharper high end of UOA5's are a nice alternative to A2's rounded top.
With the Custom platform being so adaptable to a variety of magnets, and working well in many woods, members have gone in a lot of directions magnet-wise. Maybe that's why one magnet doesn't dominate. Some are fond of C4's. And while A3's haven't really been thought of as a bridge HB magnet, some members have tried C3's. The softer highs and full mids of A3's actually make sense in a bridge PU.
