Custom 8 vs CC?

Are these similar at all? I want to try a 8 in my Alder with a maple top CHARVEL? Good match in alder with a V trem?

Re: Custom 8 vs CC?

Similar in that they both have a lot of mids, but a C8 has more output and a firm low end (unlike a CC). Plus the C8 has more treble, so it has some cut & crunch. A lot of people are liking the C8 these days, I don't hear nearly as much praise for the CC. Both are good PU's, but the C8 has the best of the CC and the C5.

Re: Custom 8 vs CC?

Yeah its the best of both world, but sometime its too much hair metal for me (can't explain in a better way.)

But, as a Chicago blues/classic rock guy, the C8 works for me. I don't have it in everything, but in some it's very nice.

Re: Custom 8 vs CC?

I tried an A4. I found it educational only hehehe. I can't see myself using an A4. It just doesn't give the kind of tones that I enjoy hearing. I found it to be tight, with lots of mids, but dull. No "sparkle" in my guitar. I did think that if I was playing rhythm guitar in a classic rock band it would probably work, but I didn't care for it for leads.

Re: Custom 8 vs CC?

... to alieviate some of the CC's inherent mid-bass "whoomp"... I pushed the bass side of my CC much deeper into the body... but I left the treble side up close to the high strings... not too close mind you... but just enough to let the notes ring more "acoustically". Looks c*ck-eyed and funky positioned that way... but it sounds more natural and closer to a classic, club-era EVH tone, than a "Hair Metal"-hack VH-clone sound.

... BTW... the CC's uber mids can be tamed by some outboard EQ... perhaps with a Boss Graphic EQ pedal placed first in the chain... no compressor needed w/ a CC.

Kind of a highjack, but is it worth it to try an A4 in a Custom?

Here is what I found doing this:

The tone is almost the same as the C5. The difference is that it shaved just allittle off of each end of the tone scale. Here is how it can be useful: I had a C5 in my Explorer. In that big mahogany beast, the C5 sounded great, but was just alittle flubby in the lows. The A4 mag gave me very similar tone, but just shaved off the flubby lows and alittle off the highs..

Re: Custom 8 vs CC?

the C8 and CC are very different.
CC is smooth and refined and most of the tone curve is in the low midrange.

The C8 is like a choir of angels singing with just enough attitude to make the hair on your arms stand up.. :naughty: Yeah, Im a C8 lover!

Nice chunk in the lows, singing highs. total package

Re: Custom 8 vs CC?

From that description, sounds like I need to put the C8 in my Ash Strat and perhaps leave the CC in my Koa one. :scratchch

Re: Custom 8 vs CC?

could someone tell me, when speaking of a custom 8 do they mean a custom five with a alinco 8 magnet in it or something other pickup with a 8 mag in it?????

yes, the Custom , custom custom, custom 5 and C8 are all the same pickup wind but with different magnets. Just changing the magnet gives them all a different voice.
Custom has ceramic magnet. It is more even thru the Eq and has a little bit more aggressive sound
Custom Custom has alnico 2 magnet. It is more pronounced in the mids and has a smooth, sweet tone.( but can still rock!)
Custom 5 has alnico 5 magnet. It is alittle bigger in the lows and highs, but has a big, full sound.

Custom 8 has an alnico 8 magnet. To me,its the creme de la creme! The eq curve is more even like the Custom, it has alittle more aggressivenes, Like the custom, but has alittle alnico warmth and soul. And a tiny bit of vintage feel on the attack.

Ive also tried alnico 4s too. They are similar the the C5, but with alil less bass and treble
Hope that helps!

I agree. I have a C-8 in my 95 Swamp Ash Washburn MG 102 and a Custom Custom in my 1995 MG 120 with the mahogany body and quilt maple top if that tells you anything:cool2:.
The Custom 8 is fat, hot, tight and quite agressive, the Custom Custom softer and weaker but still has punch. The Custom 8 is the ultimate hair metal slammer but with warmth and sweetness when you roll the volume back a notch or two, the Custom Custom the ultimate hot PAF with additude tone IMO. Both have a singing complex mid response that makes them snap out of the mix well for solos.
On the Custom wind pickups I rank them as follows
Custom 8
Custom Custom
Custom
Custom-5
The Custom 8 and Custom Custon are by far and away my favorites.

Re: Custom 8 vs CC?

I've been using an A8 magnet in a full shred - and it makes me think of an EMG type of pickup. It's really tight and dry.
