Custom/Alnico II question

I'm looking for a neck pickup to go with a custom bridge, i play a mahogany ibanez and mostly rock/hard rock. I've heard the Alnico II's are more balanced than the 59s, but do they have enough output for rock? any input is appreciated, if you've tried either of these setups.

Re: Custom/Alnico II question

It should work great. I wouldnt have any worries about the APH. BTW, you dont have to have high output for great rock and metal. BTW, Welcome to the forum.

Slash thinks they have enough output for rock :D

Re: Custom/Alnico II question

I have that very combination in my LP. It's pretty nice, but you might like to find an APH-1 rated at about 7.8 or 7.9k.

Re: Custom/Alnico II question

My A2P bridge pup measures about 8.3k ohms and it sounds great for hard rock. It has great string to string definition and it also is very warm and smooth.

I agree. The Demons and '59s I use get plenty heavy. I can play anything from Sabbath to Slayer with this setup.

Re: Custom/Alnico II question

I had the Alnico II Pro neck installed in a mahogany/maple body, maple/RW neck guitar with a Custom in the bridge and a SSL-1 in the middle. The pups matched well in terms of output but I found the APH a tad too smooth in comparison with the Custom. I later replaced the APH with a Pearly Gates and I couldn't be happier. I think the Pearly Gates in the neck complements the Duncan Custom better than the APH. Both the PG and the DC are somewhat "rude" - you know, that presence or "in your face" kind of upper midrange in the tone, and I find them a to be great match. The APH is very smooth - to me it sounded too "polite" compared to the Custom.

But that's just my ears y'know! :)

Re: Custom/Alnico II question

I just put a Custom in the bridge to go with my Distortion in the neck. They sound killer together. Very balanced. (Also, work great split.)

Re: Custom/Alnico II question

I have a 59 in my strat and it is wonderfull fordistorted solos and clean amp settings.
i am very satisfied, enough bass and treble not so much midds, i have tried the alnico 2 in a gibson les paul it has a little more midds i think its the same output
