Custom Custom in Hollowbody?

Re: Custom Custom in Hollowbody?

if you want the 59 vibe with just a little more oomph, a custom-5 is the ticket ...

i think a CC would be more loose in the lows, more pronounced in the mids and muted in the highs than a 59

if you dont want as much output, i bet a pearly gates sets would sound good too

and of course, a set of seths or ants would get you all the vintagy goodness of the roots of brit rock

All I'm worried about is the ear-bleeding highs... I've had a bad experience with '59s and my AC30.

Hot PU's & distortion tend to make hollowbodies feedback more. I think they're best clean or with a little overdrive. How dirty a sound do you want? Hollowbodies have a lot of acoustic overtones & that muddies up with too much distortion. A PAF type or other low output PU (like a Jazz) works best because they let the benefits of an acoustic body come thru.

Did you try the '59B with 250K pots? That takes off the excess treble for me. Big difference.

Now if you're thinking of a 335 as a "hollowbody" than that's totally different. They work well with hot bridge PU's and lots of distortion, pretty much like a solid body.

Re: Custom Custom in Hollowbody?

I had two real nice semi hollowbody Hamer Monoco Super Pros for a while. They came stock with the Custom Custom as the bridge pickup and it sounded fabulous in those two guitars. I put a Seth Lover neck pickup in one and found it to be an excellent match for the CC. The Pearly Gates neck has also sounded great to me with the CC, but I didn't get around to trying it in the Hamer Monoco Super Pros.

That is EXACTLY the way I'm going. Think Oasis, Radiohead, Coldplay, Hillsong United, etc.

Re: Custom Custom in Hollowbody?

I have a 335 copy with a custom custom in it.

It's a bit light on the bass, and the mids stand out. The highs aren't too bad because it's a warm instrument by nature.

Personally, I love it. I just turn the bass up a hair on my amp and rock out. Use your tone knob and play with pickup height.
