Custom Custom Sound

Hi,

I have heard that this pickup can get the later Van Halen sounds, like 1984 and Fair Warning. Is this the case? What is the history of this pickup? Was it truly invented for VH?

you really want the thruth??? :smack:
OK here goes,
back in 1977 ed got the idea of dumping a old 1961 PAF into his then FENDER strat that he was using at dances and backyard parties
he kept getting yelled at by the other band members about the strats buzzy thin tone.
So he thought "he why not have the electronics of a gibson in my strat??
BRAIN STORM!!!!!!!!!!! :laugh2:
anyway he took out a '61 gibson P.A.F out of his ES 335 he butchered :smack:
then he wanted to remove the cover of this '61 P.A.F, damaged one coil in the process :smack:
so his girlfreind at that time her dad was into electronics and ed took the damaged P.A.F to him to try to fix it.
they dad looked it over and did not want the challenge :laugh2:
so ed sought out the best pup rewinder and maker in california(can you guess who???? :laugh2: )
thats right Mr seymour duncan!
seymour rewound ONE coil(the damaged one obviously!) of this P.A.F for ed
then ed used this rewound P.A.F to break all new ground(tone, style, you name it!)
a few years later(approx 1981) ed then wanted a bit more output so he had seymour make him a P.A.F sounding pup but with more output
the custom-custom is born!
when ed hooked up with EBMM they had a deal with dimarzio which is why ed did not use duncans in his EBMM sig axe.
bottom line,
ED used both the original P.A.F that seymour rewound and the seymour made custom-custom in his guitars from fair warning all the way to F.U.C.K
which is when ALL dimarzio's are used and man you can tell! :smack: :laugh2:

Re: Custom Custom Sound

I will say that the custom custom is definately a hot pick up. Its not a low or medium output imo. Great pup, can nail VH tones with the right set up I'd think.

Re: Custom Custom Sound

The CC in my Carvin DC127T through a Marshally sounding amp gets pretty close tosoome VH tones, but it can also do a whole lot more.

Moving to Soldanos and Peaveys instead of using the Marshalls probably had more of an impact, IMO anyways.

Re: Custom Custom Sound

Good info. I always loved the tone from the CC. I need to get me a few more.

FYI the marshall is used on some of F.U.C.K
those dimarzio's are real good pups but are not no where near as classic sounding as the rewound P.A.F or the CC.

Re: Custom Custom Sound

I think he also used the Marshall on Balance too. Either right before or after F.U.C.K, his tech at the time, Scotty Ross I think, had it reworked for him. It started to lose it's tone after OU812.

I like the DiMarzio's in the EBMM better than whatever was used in the Wolfgang. I should have snagged one of those MM guitars when I had the chance. They now go for almost twice the price of what they were before he left EB.

Me too. The neck just feels right. I was able to pull stuff off that I couldn't do on other guitars. Definitely one of the best designs of that time. I could settle for an Axis since it's the same guitar but I think the pickups are different now.

DAMMIT, now I'm getting G.A.S. for one again. :yell:

BTW the solo in "JUMP" is the CC :32:

Is that really true? Any others that are definately the CC? I use the CC myself, BTW. It's my favorite "over 14K" Duncan humbucker. Very smooth and sweet pickup...reminds me of thick maple syrup!

"drop dead legs" any VH solo you hear that is fatter
like the whole track "panama" is the rewound P.A.F
compare that solo to the solo in "jump"
most of the "fair warning" record was done on the CC as well
