Custom Custom with an A8?

Wondered if anyone has tried this combination before and what it sounded like?

I have a Custom Custom in a Northern Hard Ash body Mighty Mite Strat. It's bright, articulate, and sounds killer with my DSL1HR. But the tone quest never ends, so chime in with your DIY pickup hot rod stories about the CC!

Re: Custom Custom with an A8?

The Custom Custom is the same wind as the Custom and Custom 5. The only difference is the magnet.

Do a search for "Custom 8"...dozens of threads and reviews

The C8 is a fabulous pup!

The only weird thing about it is that SD hasn't released it as a regular production pup. They have the Custom with ceramic magnet, A5 mag, and A2 mag. Why not A8 (which, by the way, just happens to put the Custom and the CC to shame in just about every way)?

Re: Custom Custom with an A8?

Thanks for the replies. Can anyone direct me to a forum member who sells A8 magnets? I think there used to be someone around who did that.

P.S. That FeeBay seller said that no more pickups would be available after he sold out his stock on hand, and they would only be available through the SD Custom Shop.

Only available through the SD Custom Shop? Psht... Anyone can make one if they have a screwdriver and the right magnet.

Check out Addiction FX. They sell A8s and more on their website.

Re: Custom Custom with an A8?

The Custom 8 isn't custom shop; i've gotten them direct from SD before as a shop floor custom.

Re: Custom Custom with an A8?

The Custom 8 may be the best value in a pickup in Duncan's line, except it's not in their line.

Big fan of the Custom 8. You owe it to yourself to try it out!

Prepare for crunchy smooth bite and growly singing tone.

i recently made one from a custom 5. wow. i have completely fallen in love with it. more growl and bite but still alot of qualities from the 5

Re: Custom Custom with an A8?

Maybe the Custom should be sold with a variety of EZ-Swap (TM) magnets.

Re: Custom Custom with an A8?

Thanks for all the replies! I have (2) A8's and (1) A5 on order.

Also, if anyone has a Screamin Demon bridge for sale, I'd like to try that with an A8 as well. The A5 is for a DiMarzio SD.

I guessing SD stands for Super Distortion ? Just beware that pickup can be a PITA to swap magnets cause the large ceramic magnet is glued in , at least they used to be glued in . It`s been done but it`s not an easy swap like a duncan

Re: Custom Custom with an A8?

That's right - Super Distortion. Thanks for the heads up. I really hate scraping glue - that might cancel that plan for me.

It’s not really glue, it’s more like a silicon DAP. It comes off pretty easy if you have a hair dryer or a heat gun, just be very careful with the heat gun, they can melt solder so there is no question what they can do to plastic, the vinyl coating on the cable or your flesh. You may want to be careful not to over heat the magnet if you plan on using it again but it’s most likely not an issue for ceramic. Also the magnet in some of the hex slugged dimarzio’s like the super line or evo have a magnetic shim spacing out the magnet so don’t lose that.
