Custom/Custom???

I have questions about the sh-11 custom/custom. First what guitars are they usually installed in strats or pauls maybe the occaisional PRS? Also I have noticed the high midrange spike. Is it more of a lower or a upper midrange sound? How does it respond to pinch harmonics? How would it sound in an ash bodied / maple neck fretboard strat with a humbucker in the bridge, through a mesa/boogie recto.

maybe some of you may have other have another pickup recomendation. I definatly want a heavy sound nice and crunchy good for metal lead and rythym. The stock humbucker sucks and i want a better sound. Would like desriptions fo the sh-11 and or reccomendations. Thanxs :cool3: :burnout:

Hey John, as far as what guitars the CC calls home, well any and all. Evan has one in his PRS, lots of guys here have them in LP's, and it sounds nice in strat style guitars as well.

The midrange spike is a lower midrange spike instead of upper midrange, like the JB. It's high output so it responds well to pinch harmonics, but not quite like the JB or Dist. It's not an issue that a techinque change won't help.

I have one in my 355, though I switched mags from A2 to A3. I wouldn't really call it a "high" output pickup, more medium-high.

You know that does help some however, how do you think that would mate to the rectafiers modern channel. I ask because i have hear d a recording by the band Skillet and they use GMP guitars which come stock with The sh-11 custom custom, granted the gmp is likley short scale. Some of the tones sound good others on that album sound mushy. I was thinking that the warmth of the sh-11 might be a good match with the ash body. Any other ideas any one?? Thanks PRS lustologist. ( I hope to have a PRS soon myself)

I agree with the above posts, and feel that the CC is a very nice pickup. My only issue is the "metal" tone that you get when soloing up the neck.. of course that's a positive note for those who want that tone.

The CC has lots of midrange. You can actually get a good country tone out of it clean, and it really screams nicely under some quality distortion. It is a little soft on the bottom end when compared to a JB or a 59, which are pickups that use alnico 5 magnets.

I think the CC is well suited for metal soloing/harmonics. If you are more in to big crunchy rythm, I'd suggest the JB or the Custom.. although the CC is pretty good at crunchy rythm also.

I've had a CC in a Les Paul and a tele. The CC bottom end comes across as tighter on the tele, and I suspect that it's similar in a strat. I have heard good things about CC pickups in strats of various common woods.

ive played a gmp with a cc once in LA.last year,at mesa boogie hollywood,threw a mesa roadking combo clean to a most unholy bad sounding and expensive JT pedals valveboy.
it was too midrangey and with 009´s i couldn´t cut threw with my hard string playing.
but it was very fat.fatter than most les pauls.
hoped this helped.
the paf 59 seemed very thin in the neck after playing the cc

I like it in brighter guitars, where the mid range balances nicely with the highs and the guitar itself provides the twang on the bottom. I have one n an all maple Carvin DC 127T and it sounds great, as I imagine it wil in your ash/maple strat.

If you want tighter, more aggressive lows, a magnet swap will turn it into a Custom (ceramic) or Custom 5 (alnico 5), which might be more along the lines of what you are looking for.

Thanks alot I will likely give the sh-11 a go round in my strat. It really is a great axe but the stock humbucker sucks. I may put in the quarter pound sigle coils as they sound like a bit better single. God Bless!!!!

The Custom Custom comes stock in the Hamer Monoco Super Pro...Hamer's top of the line guitar. That is a chambered guitar with a 25.5" scale...sort of a single cutaway semi hollowbody design without F holes.

The CC is my favorite "overwound" humbucker. It has lots of smooth, almost syrupy, midrange...very smooth treble and plenty of bass but not as deep, tight or wide of a bass response as an alnico 5 humbucker like the 59 or JB. Plenty of bass though, especially for a bridge pickup.

I adjust my CC close to the strings as that gives it a little more treble and bite.

I've done many comparisms of my CC to other great pickups like the 59B, JB, Tom Holmes HB's, Gibson Burstbuckers and Harmonic Design HB's. It holds it's own with all of them and bests most of them.

You should just try one and see what you think because you'll never know what it sounds like until you try it in your own guitar. Descriptions are like telling someone who's never tasted a mango what a mango tastes like...you just have to take a bite and see.

Then you'll know.

Personally, I prefer the CC in semi hollowbody guitars. It sounded really great in my solid body Hamer but not quite as great and lively as it does in my Monoco Super Pro.

In THAT guitar, it sounds better than the $300 Tom Holmes HB's in my Les Paul and that's the absolute truth.

You know I agree with what you say about descriptions for sure but I think that much info can be gained by having another perspective. interesting you mentioned semi hollow guitars, as I am currently trying different duncan pick ups for a semi-hollow guild bluesbird. All the essential ingredients of a les-paul only with a chambered non- f-holed body. In an earlier post in this thread I mentioned a band that uses GMP guitars that come stock with the sh-11 custom custom, what i did not mention is that they use basically the same amp I do. I am almost curious to try one in the bird. If yous curious refer to Sh-5 custom queston. I am definatly going to try one in my strat. Thanks for responding man!! :cool3: God Bless!!!!
