Custom, Custom5 or Custom Custom?

For a HSS strat body...don't know what wood.
Middle and Neck will have Quarter Pound. Looking for a fat bottom end...think of the intro to "Pull Me Under" from DT.

Thanks

Re: Custom, Custom5 or Custom Custom?

Petrucci's always used DiMarzios with ceramic magnets, hasn't he? I would think that the original Duncan Custom would be in that range, but then again, he's used A LOT of different pickups over the years.

Anybody know what he was using for that track?

I'm not trying to replicate his exact sound, just wanted to give you an idea of the sound I like. Another good example is the riff to No More Tears...a nice Chug-A, Chug-A...but no squeally hahaha

Re: Custom, Custom5 or Custom Custom?

Because of the scoop, the Custom 5 may be the better bet.

A Mark series Mesa with a 5-band is far more essential to the right tone than the pickup so long as the pikcup you're using is at least in the ballpark.

The DiMarzio pickup on that album was likely a Tone Zone.

Now if the expert consensus is that a Custom will better replicate a Tone Zone than a Custom 5 then I'll go along with it; however I suspect the current line of reasoning was "Petrucci (currently) uses a ceramic pickup, therefore go with a ceramic pickup."

FWIW, I used to play that track with a JB and an MP1 and it worked well enough.

Oh, the EMG wasn't a recommendation.

It was what I thought was used on the recording of No More Tears.

Nope, want to go with SD. I'll go with the Custom. As far as the Quarter Pound for middle and neck, should I go flat or staggered?

Not sure it'll matter much with those, but I'm sure it'd be directly related to the board/nut radius.

I had a hardtail Strat-style some years ago with a Custom in the bridge, and I think the body was alder with a flamed cap - may have been solid maple, I'll have to dig out the pics. The Custom was a perfect match, IMO, as it merely amplified the acoustic tone of the guitar. That's the only guitar I ever had that did that.

Re: Custom, Custom5 or Custom Custom?

The Custom is my choice, but you are but a magnet swap from the other 'custom variations' you mentioned. An A2 manget will give you the Custom Custom, and an A5 magnet will give you the Custom 5.

A few years had passed before the Steve's Special became commercially available.

Re: Custom, Custom5 or Custom Custom?

He was using a Dimarzio Steve's Special (Ceramic) in his Ibanez guitars on that album.

I'm pretty sure Images and Words was Tone Zone / Air Norton & he moved to the Steve's Special for either Awake or Falling Into Infinity. The Tone Zone is a rather unique sounding pickup that doesn't have an exact match in the SD range, but the (ceramic) Custom is probably closest.

As an aside I'm generally not a huge fan of DiMarzios, but the Tone Zone / Air Norton combo is cool and I'd absolutely buy them if I could justify another SuperStrat.

Regarding flat/staggered, what DrNewcenstein said; that depends on your fingerboard radius. I'm not a fan of vintage stagger and would only use it on a 7.25" radius.

Re: Custom, Custom5 or Custom Custom?

The radius is only part of the problem.

Vintage stagger will over-emphasize the G string in a lighter set, regardless of the radius. Balance between the B and E may also be less than ideal, depending on how light you go.

I read an article on the SD website all about the HSS configuration. It states that a good combination is one of the Customs for bridge and the Quarter Pound for middle and neck. Then I noticed that there are two options for QP, flat and staggered. Based upon this thread, looks like I will go with flat. So a Duncan Custom and two Quarter Pound Flat. Now I just need to find a place that sells them in Canada.
