Custom-like Dimarzio?

Which DiMarzio(s) would you place in the same neighborhood as the SH-5 Custom -- i.e. a bigger PAF-like with a ceramic-type attack, responsive to volume, and a broad frequency spread? I love the Custom's chunk and pick attack, and find its versatility really appealing.

Under consideration (but pitch outside the box if I'm missing something!):
* Titan
* Dominion
* Illuminator
* Transition
* Gravity Storm (might be way off on this one)

Just to head off the obvious "Well, just get a Custom" comments: I already have a Custom in this guitar (JS1000, trem basswood Ibby), but it isn't meshing well with the Evo neck. The Custom is going to go in another guitar, and I'd like to match brands with the Evo.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Custom-like Dimarzio?

You'd probably be better off by asking that question of www.dimarzioforum.com or call in to DiMarzio after 12 noon EST and ask for tech support.

I'll be sure to ask over there; thanks. Figured I'd start here because the Duncan board is full of switch-hitters who understand the subtle (or not so subtle!) differences between my reference pickup and, say, a C5 and a Distortion. Plus, I've read a lot of good reviews over there already, and they helped me zone in on the DiMarzio list above.

Re: Custom-like Dimarzio?

The Dominion, the Titan, and the Illuminator all fall into the category of the things you are suggesting (big PAF, responsive, etc.).

Another Duncan guy, Luke Duke, also tried an Illuminator set recently and seemed to like it a lot.

They can all handle a wide range and should not be painted into a corner by any artist affiliation. I think of those three, the Illuminator might be it. The Titan set is just a little bit tighter, with a faster response. The Dominion is just a little bit in the other direction. All are well-balanced and don't really fall in to a too-much-of-this or a not-enough-of-that situation.

Big Flannel has a Titan set an can comment more on that one too.
