Custom or Custom Custom for bridge of SG

So I have a three pickup SG Custom. Going with a PG neck and a PG bridge in the middle (middle toggle position is bridge and middle pickup). Considering the CC for bridge but saw Lew's recent thread where he loves the PGn and Custom bridge combo. He mentioned that sometimes he thinks the CC does not have enough treble. Basically I want the neck PG for sweet bluesy tones but I want the bridge pickup to be able to get nice and raunchy when playing overdriven or distorted. I will not be coil splitting these. Just want a humbucking combo that is very versatile. Would I be disappointed with the CC, or should I just go for the ceramic Custom?

Re: Custom or Custom Custom for bridge of SG

I mostly love the Custom Custom! But yes, I do sometimes wish it had just a little more sparkle and edge to the highs and alittle bigger and tighter low end. So when I feel like that I reach for my Strats with either the Duncan Custom or Duncan 59B! :laugh2:

IMO, SG's are kind of thin and twangy sounding. Not that they can't sound fabulous...Eric Clapton, when he played with Cream, proved how fabulous an SG can sound! But he was using alnico 5 pickups like the 59B through a huge 100 watt Marshall stack when I saw him in '67. Alnico 5 gives a pickup more bass and highs, IMO...although there are always exceptions.

It's hard for to tell you not to go for the Duncan Custom...I think it lacks nothing!

Whereas I sometimes wish the CC had more deep bass and more sparkle to the treble like the 59B...and whereas I sometimes wish the 59B had more output and more mids like the CC...the Custom is just about perfect just like it is.

In fact, it sound slike it has combined the qualities of my other favorite humbuckers all in one pickup.

The Custom Custom would probably sound great in your SG...but I'm going to suggest the Duncan Custom.

I had the Custom in an SG Standard, IMO it was a bit on the trebly side. I think the CC would fill out the sound a little better with the bigger mids.

All hails for the Custom Alnico 8, sounds like this would be just what you are looking for.

Here's a thought: PG set neck & Bridge, CC middle. That way you get your top and bottom from the PG's, and whenever you kick in the CC it will add a bunch of mids to the sound. Or...PG neck, CC middle, and custom bridge. Or, if too trebly switch the CC and the Custom.

Great info and suggestions guys. Thanks very much. So it sounds like the Custom, having more high end and being ceramic, possibly resembles a Duncan Distortion to a degree? Maybe not quite as aggressive but similar? Aceman, I like your idea. I can swap the middle pickup and bridge pickup as desired until I like what I hear best. How cool is that !

Re: Custom or Custom Custom for bridge of SG

I agree with Lew on the CC needing a bit of a tighter low end, but I did think it had a sufficient amount of treble. The CC is raunchy sounding, but what kind of raunchy are we thinking here, tight raunchy or loose raunchy? The CC's more loose raunchy, which I quite liked about it. It sounded a bit brownish to me

Re: Custom or Custom Custom for bridge of SG

Both are awesome pickups, but for this application I'd have to say a Custom for the reasons noted above.
