Pete Cornish is da man. No off-the-shelf MIDI switchers, just purpose-built pedalboards from scratch. He's been the inspiration for my pedalboards since my first one in about 1982. Some of my favorite players used Cornish 'boards back in the day, most noteably Andy Summers, and Robbie McIntosh with the Pretenders.
Cornish follows Henry Ford's rule - any color you want, as long as it's black. I once read that back in the 80's, ABBA wanted a Cornish pedalboard for a tour. Everything on the stage was going to be white, so they requested he paint the board white. He refused, and they toured with an all-white-except-for-one-black-pedalboard stage set.
