Custom Shop Humbuckers

Does anyone know how to determine what style each P/U would be for. For example, looking at the JB its description states from blues to metal but looking through the custom shop humbuckers there is no tone/style description.

Re: Custom Shop Humbuckers

I have a couple, and, to be honest, the ones I have can be used for pretty much anything. Yep, they're that good.

I have a S Deco in the bridge of my '81 Hamer Special. This pickup sits right at 11k and is loaded with an alnico v magnet. The highs are bright and chimeyb definately leaning towards the sweet side of things as opposed to having any harsh or ice picky tendencies. The mids are pretty even, without any large bumps or dips. The lows are big, tight, and percussive. It sounds hotter than the specs indicate when you dig in, but has a beautiful, big, open clean tone when you back off your right hand attack or play through a high headroom/high power amp. This pickup, IMHO, can cover everything from funk to nu-metal with the right amp set up.

I have an El Diablo in the bridge of my Epi LP. This pickup has two big blade poles and an alnico II mag. It's wound in the low 17k range. This pickup has strong highs, slightly dipped mids, and big, taught lows. with high gain, this pickup has a crushing rythm tone. Bump up the mids and roll off some presence and the lead tones are thick, muscular, and very present. Riffs seem to jump out of this pickup. VERY easy to play. To get cleans, you need plenty of headroom from your amp, but if it has it, the cleans are excellent. Big, punchy, and cutting. Split, it has plenty of twang and bite, perfect for country, funk, rockabilly, or pretty much anything you'd use an electric guitar for.

The one defining factor of these pickups is CLARITY, no matter what the gain level is set at. This is a common factor of the other CS pickups in my posession. I have an antiquity neck and a Lil PG for strat and they all are very clear and detailed. Love em all.
