Custom shop hybrid pickup

Thinking about getting a custom shop pickup. Would go into an ESP neck through maple with mahogany wings, ebony fretboard. Bright guitar and sounds like all the traits of a neck through.

I like the idea of the custom custom for big mids and softer high end, but I'd also like a bit of cut/bite, which of course counters the soft high end of the CC.

So maybe one coil CC, and another coil using...?

Also, does one coil naturally have more output than the other?

Thanks

Re: Custom shop hybrid pickup

On the regular Custom Custom, both coils are wound the same. You get a little more punch from the "slug" coil due to the pole pieces vs the "screw" coil, but that's about it.

If you're not opposed to looking outside the custom shop, I'd strongly recommend you take a look at the EVH Frankenstein, which is made by Duncan for the EVH brand. Sounds like what you're after, honestly.

The Perpetual Burn is another pickup that might fit your needs.

You could also look at a "Hot PAF" style pickup with an Alnico II mag, such as the Slash or '78 model. On that note, a Custom Custom/'78 hybrid would be pretty neat sounding, I'm guessing.

Re: Custom shop hybrid pickup

Just buy a standard production 59/Custom and throw an Alnico 2 in there. That would fit the bill for what you're looking for; it also happens to be the bridge pickup in my #1 Strat.

Re: Custom shop hybrid pickup

What about an A5 mag in the CC? Or would just be the Custom 5?

Also considering a parallel axis patb1 with an A2 mag. I like that pickup - would an A2 mag lower the output considerably?

A5 in a CC is indeed a Custom 5. Great pickup, especially in mid-heavy guitars.
