Custom/Vintage Rail/Jazz Neck question

In choosing the vintage rail for the middle slot, did I go wrong? It seems to be rolling with about half the volume as the big boys in the B and N slots...did I maybe reverse a wire or two? I've got 1 vol and 1 tone with a 5 way. Guitar is an Ibanez Prestige RG1570 in Mirage Blue...the pups are White. Totally kickin' look...I'm just wondering if I need to swap something in there.

Bumpity bump.

Is there a method to wiring a vintage rail with 2 buckers on a 5 way that i'm missing here?

Thanks duders!

J.

Re: Custom/Vintage Rail/Jazz Neck question

Have you tried adjusting the height of the pickups? You might be able to just raise the vintage rails to even out the volume.

Re: Custom/Vintage Rail/Jazz Neck question

Didn't help, plus I need to leave that middle guy lower as it gets in the way of my picking hand....it almost seems like half output...and it's not playing totally nice with the bigger buckers...but i digress it is quiet.

Re: Custom/Vintage Rail/Jazz Neck question

how did you wire the vintage rails?

for series, the hottest, should be

red and white wired together

green to ground

black to positive (switch)

I haven't popped the back plate off...i didn't wire this one unfortunately, but I will check this....if that's not the case I'll get to swapping it like that....thanks guys.

P.O.T.

So in otherwords...I should remove the red and whites from the lug that my tech tied them off to? I'm guessing that this thing is tapping the VR at all times now...

Yes, sorta. You definitely shouldn't split a VR because of its split-pole design. However, if you want to get the sound that Duncan designed it to have, you should wire it in parallel. White and green to ground, red and black to hot. There's nothing that says you must wire it that way. Thats just how it was designed to sound. The original VR's were wired internally that way.

Also, the VR does tend to be a lower output pup than some. Removing the red and white from whereever they're attached will be a good start, though.

Re: Custom/Vintage Rail/Jazz Neck question

Measure the DC resistance of the pickup the way that it is connected right now to make sure there's no wiring screwup or broken pickup.

Also, you probably want a 250 Kohm volume poti for it.

I might try the parallel wiring, I think I goofed on this one hahaha. It's ok tho' I'm not a purist...if I opt to gank this one out (it had to be shaved on the sides to fit the IBZ route...I guess I can't return it since techguy modded it...)I'll try the parallel wiring instead, if not i'll just get something else in there...if I swap the mofo, anybody got a good suggestion as to what I should pop in there? It was sort of a whatever is available thing that I did on this one...hahaha. Oops. howsabout a hot stack?

Re: Custom/Vintage Rail/Jazz Neck question

Looks like the ssl-5 or the cool rail is the best option at this point...thanks guys...i might just grab both and play swappy and see what i dig.

Re: Custom/Vintage Rail/Jazz Neck question

Going to go with the Custom Staggered SSL-5...anybody know if i need the reverse wound/ reverse polarity i'm putting it in the middle with buckers?
