Re: Custom vs. JB

You bastard! How dare you make one choose!!

In my LP lies the Custom, all mighty and powerful. Huge, aggressive, addictive sound to it. Very piercing.

The JB is in my Soloist and it has a very smooth quality to it that I just love. Beautiful lead voice and incredibly warm. Perfect clarity and dynamics. Good solid, round bottom end. Buttery uppermids with soft highs. Extremely versatile.

GRRR....I hate to do this - because they truly are two completely differently voiced pickups.....but I'd have to go with the JB because there's not a thing I couldn't do with it.

Re: Custom vs. JB

Custom. The notes sound thicker than the JB. This is true for both the high strings and the low strings.

My comparison is between my JB and Custom equiped guitars (JB has 250k pots, Custom has 500k) as well as the SD sound clips.

Re: Custom vs. JB

I personally like the custom a bit better. I LOVE the JB for leads but, I dislike it for rythm work. I wish it were a little tighter.

Re: Custom vs. JB

I like the Custom better than the JB in my Jackson,
and the DD better in my Schecter.

The JB just didn't work as well as the others did for me.

Re: Custom vs. JB

I've had both in my Les Pauls over the years.

IMO the Custom is flat out the better pickup in a Paul. The JB does chords and lower stirng riffs well, but gets nasally and thin for leads...you lose the thickness in the higher strings/registers..it whines rather than screams.

The Custom on the other hand retains it's punch anywhere on the neck..it cuts better without being nasal like the JB and still retains it's thick sound..overall it does everything better, while still sounding somewhat PAF-ish.

Now in a bolt on neck guitar, the JB is a different story...

Re: Custom vs. JB

Chances are if you like a JB but want more output you'll like a disotrtion. If you don't like the JB, you may not like it. The disortion is basically a JB with an oversized ceramic magnet which changes its EQ curve and output.

Re: Custom vs. JB

JB or Custom - IN A SEMI????

or, my epiphone 335's bridge position to be exact. Mostly do rhythm work (open and chunky barre chords) but wanna move ont some riffs too...

Re: Custom vs. JB

I think the Custom can be hard and cold and a good alternative is the C-5 since it will be warmer and sweeter.

Re: Custom vs. JB

Since i have only try the Custom in two guitars and in the two guitars sounds so f...ing great i choose the Custom, wheni bought it i mount it on an Ibanez GRG 370 with a DD on the neck but now since i bought a DD for the bridge for a metal raw tone i move the Custom to my Peavey Tracer with H-s-s, and the improvement was, is and will be great for any axe!!!

Re: Custom vs. JB

I just got a custom recently and have had the JB for a bit now.
both are really great so choosing one over the other is kind of a coin toss.
I love the JB's trademark singing tone and crunchy rhythm tones as well as the versitility of it.
the custom is more like duncans description it is a paf but bigger, louder, more aggressive.
like i said before for me it is a coin toss between these two.

Well, I originally was going to put a JB, then I thought I'd put a custom, because it's ceramic and would match well with a Gibson 500T. Now I think I'm going to go DD neck and Custom in bridge. That seems like a pretty sweet combo to me. This is a Les Paul classic, and I NEED that thick crunch on chords but that thick scream from the soloing for that guitar. DD is a good match in the neck?

Re: Custom vs. JB

Custom here. Got one loaded up in my les paul, It saved that guitar for me. the 500T got real old real fast, but The custom kicked a lot of ass. heh.
Anyways...I tried the JB, and I like certain aspects of it, but its not the pickup for me. As for the DD, I really dislike that pickup, to me it just sounds wayyy too fuzzy. Had one loaded up in a schecter for a while and it just didnt do anything for me.

On the other hand though, I like the screamin demon a lot. I wouldnt take one over a custom, but its still a nice pickup.

Re: Custom vs. JB

that's just not cool man!

too hard to choose for me

i accidentally broke the custom, but if i didn't break it it'd still be in the charvel i had it in. after going through some pickups, i put a JB in and it's great!!

but i dont know, i dont have them both at hand to compare
