CUt AN A5 in HALF and JOIN IT to an A2 !!!!!!!

This is what I did initially, using an SD Jazz neck in a Gibson 1998 ES 335.
The results were spectacular !
I cut an A5 in half and butted it to an A2 which I had also cut in half so that the A5 mag was at the bass end ( E A D strings ) and the A2 was at the top end ( G B topE ).
......Tight well defined lows with little mud and wonderful seperation married to smooth musical highs with great delicacy and lots of harmonic structure.
So next I tried cutting the magnets into smaller pieces so that I could put a piece of A5 magnet for the bottom E and A, an A2 for the D, an A5 for the G and two seperate pieces of A2 for the B and E.
Wonderful gains in terms of balancing the pick up and marrying it to the sound of the guitar again.
I used a fine hacksaw blade and wet and dry to smooth the cut.
Give this a go and see if it works as well for you.

I did much the same thing with a Screamin Demon except I cut A5 & ceramic lengthwise with the ceramic towards the bridge and the A5 towards the neck.

wow that sounds cool, it didnt mess with the strength?

I just got a PM from Natman saying he is going to send me 2 double thick half sized full length A5 mags that i can try in my bluesbucker! im excited

You guys are going to keep going until your reverse the earth's magnetic pole and cause one of those "Day After Tomorrow" scenarios, I just know it!

It just ain't natural..:bigeyes2:

Re: CUt AN A5 in HALF and JOIN IT to an A2 !!!!!!!

i asked about a 5/2 humbucker and everyone said the magnets degauss each other

so i'm thinking yours will too

Having studied vorticies of time space cotinuoms and indecies of time space aberrations I can assure you that there will be no reversal of the Earths magnetic pole but rather a minor bipolar fluctuation of the magnetic distribution and flow.
There is the possibility however of an "Indepence Day" scenario as aliens may read the redistributed fluctuation of polar magnetism as an attempt to communicate with outer space.
If you wish to be on the safe side.......Play your guitar - don't play with it !

Re: CUt AN A5 in HALF and JOIN IT to an A2 !!!!!!!

I am very intrigued now... I like the low strings of a SD Distortion but for leads I like the JB. Now if there were a ceramic-alnico5 mod of one of those pickups the best of both worlds would be possible...
So this degaussing business? How can that be prevented?

Re: CUt AN A5 in HALF and JOIN IT to an A2 !!!!!!!

i knew i shoulda jumped on this first!! i've been wanting to do this for a long time...im glad it worked out for you mayne!! keep the results coming!

Re: CUt AN A5 in HALF and JOIN IT to an A2 !!!!!!!

I've heard of humbuckers with A2 for the lower strings and A5 for the higher ones...

Re: CUt AN A5 in HALF and JOIN IT to an A2 !!!!!!!

another easy no cutting mags mod is to remove the metal screw retainer bar so that it creates a gap and then choose which coil you want the gap on
I like most with the gap at the screw side, this really warms up the pup if it is real bright and drops the output some

Re: CUt AN A5 in HALF and JOIN IT to an A2 !!!!!!!

Some one suggested slanting the magnet after removing the retainer, so that one coil was "non-air" on the big E string and the other coil was "non-air" on the little E string, with various amount of air on the strings inbetween. ;)

that is the frank falbo mod i believe?

Yep. The vari-air he calls it. I've heard good things about it.

Re: CUt AN A5 in HALF and JOIN IT to an A2 !!!!!!!

I vaugely remember somebody else doing the same thing like 6 7 years ago on this forum (before the **** monkey erased the whole forum, remember??? :D ).

Anyways, the magnet should get really heated up while cutting, and that could mess up with the magnetic field (as far as I know). Thus, I am really curious about your gauss readings after the cutting.

B

IIRC when the single coil 5/2 came out there was talk on the old board that Duncan was working on a humbucker, but it apparantly didn't pan out for some reason.
