Re: D-Sonic...who's used one?

I have personally only played one briehly through a Vox Valvetronix but..

Got to:

The songs in the playlist are recorded with Ibanez RG basswood body maple neck tuned to C (11's or 12's) and it has a D-Sonic in the bridge. Rhythm parts any way I'm not sure with what they recorded solos with (It's not me playing) It was the very same guitar that I played thorugh the Vox and even then it sounded very good, very mean badass sounds.

And you probably know that John Petrucci used D-sonic 2004-2009 so Octavarium (Basswood body guitar) and Systematic Chaos (Alder/Mahogany body guitar) was recorded with those and the in-between tours.

Re: D-Sonic...who's used one?

I can't comment on D-Sonic, but I have Crunch Lab in my main guitar (basswood RG2550) and I love it. Nails Petrucci tone, if that's what you're after. Very articulate, never loose, never shrill and never boxy, so it's gread for tight rhythm but also very nice for solo.

Re: D-Sonic...who's used one?

I've had two. One was an agathis (like mahogany) baritone, the other an alder Strat. Both had maple/rosewood necks, both were tuned down to C, B, and A at some points. Great pickup. It will bring the heaviness.

Re: D-Sonic...who's used one?

I have a CL currently in my RG. I like it...tho I'm wondering if Petrucci was looking to "take a step back" into a slightly less modern sounding PuP with it vs the D-sonic. I was listening to "On the back of Angels" last night...and his rythem sound has crunch...but seems to lack sizzle?

Re: D-Sonic...who's used one?

CL is very hi-fi sounding pickup. Even full on distortion sounds very smooth and polite :) Steve's Special is even more so. D-Sonic seems to be brighter and less polite than both. I haven't tried only D-Sonic of those three pickups, but from listening DT stuff that seems to be the case.

Re: D-Sonic...who's used one?

The D-Sonic is one of my favorite Dimarzios. You can set it low under the strings and get a softer sound with less output, or raise it up a bit and get a heavy rock tone. It sounds great with all kinds of amp settings, clean to distorted, scooped, blues breakup, etc... I ONLY use it with the bar magnet installed towards the neck. I don't like it installed the other way even though it sounds incredible for thrash metal that way. It sounded good in my basswood Ibanez, basswood/maple Musicman Axis, and in now in my alder strat.

Whats the main difference flipped both ways? I take it more lows with the bar toward the neck? More highs the other way?

With the bar towards the neck, it's smoother, warmer, and the mid range is thick. With the bar towards the bridge, it's brighter, bassier, mid scooped.
