my dad finally broke down when i learned how to play his favorite song and said i could play my amp loud in the house. he said i could trade in my fender amp for a tube combo if i wanted. well no sh*t i want to. i was thinking a marshall. one of my friends is going to give me 500 for my amp. what marshall tube combo? i was thinking 50-100 watts. any advice because i am very very clueless.

Do yourself a big favor. Take your favorite guitar down to the biggest guitar shop you can find and plug into everything! You'll figure it out on your own with your own ears. There a tone of great options out there.

Youmentioned Marshalls. What type music do you play? That's probably the first question.

mostly classic rock, zeppelin, jimi, SRV, bluesy classic rock. and then some newer alternative stuff like incubus and some of mark tremonti's stuff. ill go to guitar center tomorrow. thanks scott!

Do as much research as you can on the models in your price range, and then play everything you can within 100 miles of yer house (as Scott suggested).

Perhaps the most practical advice even given on this forum are the ones given above. It's helpful to have other people share their experiences but your own will always be the ultimate deciding factor.

and consider getting a good condition used amp if a good opportunity arises from a reputable source ... you can usually get a better amp used than new for the same money ... what will your total budget be?

what song did you have to learn to win your dad over?

cheers

Aye, it's a great song, so it is.
Imagine if you had played What Is And What Should Never Be! You would probably be getting a 1/2 stack! :D
$750 is not a lot of money ... spend wisely!!

Re: dad is finally going to let me get a tube combo

If you want tube and loud, you want a small wattage (unless you mean... VERY loud)
Tube amps sound better when CRANKED. 50 watts tube is louder than a 100 watts SS... And it will sound good only at very high volumes.
Unless you play in a band, I think that 15 watts should be enough. 30 maybe if you play with a band but don't gig.

I'd advise the Fender Blues Junior, the Laney LC15 for the 15 watter. 30 watts, Peavey Classic 30, Laney LC30, Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (40 watts), Marshall DSL401 (40 watts)...

Re: dad is finally going to let me get a tube combo

I agree that a 50w tube amp is plenty loud. You can get a used combo amp for that, a head and cab will probably be out of reach. Buying used is the way to go, but sometimes parents who are not musically inclined may be a bit wary of used equipment. One new items to keep in mind if you want something in the Marshall vein is the Traynor Blue 50. It has been getting some rave reviews, and I believe is $679 new. It's supposed to have nice cleans as well.

Good luck.

Re: dad is finally going to let me get a tube combo

I just picked up a Rivera Chubster 40. Great amp with Fender cleans and Marshall type distortion. I got it used for $750 with the footswitch. Definitely worth checking out.

Re: dad is finally going to let me get a tube combo

I agree 50 watts ia lot of power man when it comes to tube amps. Looking into a smaller amp like say 30 watts of tube amp would be much more effective. You can push the amp more without blowing your ear drums or angering any neighbors. Unless your a gigging muscician you dont really need a 50-100 watt tube amp anytime soon. Fender make great amps for the price as do marshall. But the cost will probably be more than 750 unless your going used.

Traynor 50blue. By far the best amp you can get for the money for the sound you are looking for. It'll kill tube combo marshalls and last longer too.

Re: dad is finally going to let me get a tube combo

Congratulations! Try 'em all and then decide. Check out some amps in the 15 - 30 watt range, I gig with a 30 watter and its plenty LOUD. Good luck......Joe

Re: dad is finally going to let me get a tube combo
