damnit gibson.....

my explorer has a scratchy volume pot, so i bought a can of tuner cleaner to see if thatll do the trick, and i open up the control cavity to find that the little holes in the pots are too f*cking small to fit the little needle into to shoot the stuff in. i tried just getting the needle near the opening, but it all shot up in my face :laugh2: anybody have any ideas?

Re: damnit gibson.....

There is plenty of space to get spray into Gibson pots.
Here's an idea that works for me- take an old unwound guitar string and insert it into the plastic tube, take a lighter and slowly heat the tube until you can put a bend into it, let it cool, remove the string, and you will have a turn on the tube, making it easier to get up and into the pot.

i tried it a couple times just shooting straight in (i had the wrong hole last time, i thought it went in the little holes on top). anyway, i think i just have a bad pot, its not helping. its not like theres just one scratchy point either. its 0-scratchy-10, theres no good spots in between, just on or off.

Re: damnit gibson.....

ok so does anybody know what value pots gibson uses in recent explorers. i always assumed 300k, but i wanna be sure

Re: damnit gibson.....

The good news is the quality CTS pots are cheap....

Re: damnit gibson.....

right

so why doesnt gibson use quality ones in the first place! oh well. id be more pissed at them if i didnt love that guitar so much haha. the pot has been sh!t since i first got it though, its just gotten worse over time. now that i think of it, if i caught it early with some cleaner it probably woulda been an easy fix, but what can i say im lazy

Re: damnit gibson.....

is that the value that was stock? cause i wanna keep the same, since as far as brightness goes, everythings just right (i have a JB in there mind you, and theyre supposed to be used with 250k pots really)

Totally agreed! As soon as I got my Standard, I replaced all the pots with CTS 500Ks and put in a set of Hovlands. Your right though, how much could it cost to use decent pots :smack:
