Dano Fab Distortion

Anybody have one of these? I picked one up in a pawn shop awhile back pretty cheap. As a distortion pedal, it pretty much blows. As an overdrive in front of a gritty amp, it's not too bad. The tone knob has a really weird sweep, and the gain needs to stay very, very low. I'm not crazy about it with my Les Paul, but it's pretty nice with single coils.

Re: Dano Fab Distortion

I've never been much of a distortion user. When I do use dirt, I rely on a couple of low gain od's I've had for years. Like you however, I found one of these Fab's cheap at a pawn shop. I figured for $10, why not try it.

While I too found the controls quite touchy, I thought the distortion tone was as good as several other pedals I've used that sold for a lot more money. I never used it live though, so I have no idea how it would perform in that situation, but for around the house stuff, it was fine. I wound up giving it to a young guitar player and he still uses it.

Re: Dano Fab Distortion

I used to own a Danelectro Reverb. Boy was that a stinker. It turned into a weird slap like effect when it was turned up all the way. But not a useful sound, just that of wailing/gnashing of teeth

Re: Dano Fab Distortion

I had the fab OD and fab metal. Nice pedals for the price. Sold em both though. Didn't reach for them all that much in the long run.

Re: Dano Fab Distortion

Are you talking about the Fab pedal with the maroon metal housing, or the red plastic one? The metal Fab distortion sounded pretty shrill to me when i tried one, couldn't find a usable tone in it anywhere. The red plastic one sounds much better to me, for what it is. So far, i've found it most usable with my tele, dirt cranked, tone rolled just shy of full bass.
The plastic metal pedal would sound better with a better tone range, imo.

Re: Dano Fab Distortion

Yes, the maroon one. A weird feature I like is having the knobs on the front. I'm less apt to set them according to how I think they should be, rather than just listening.

Re: Dano Fab Distortion

I've never tried any of their other pedals but the FAB ECHO; I bought that one new for $15--wow! Great value. Has one great tone and that's it, but it does that one thing really well. I'm using it on my acoustic pedal board.

Re: Dano Fab Distortion

I have all the Fab pedals except the OD pedal. The best one is the blue chorus pedal. It's the only one I still use. The Echo pedal is pretty cool. You get a nice Rockabilly slap back echo but that's it. They are ok for what they are, a $15.00 pedal. The distortion pedal is probably one of the worst in the line. YMMV

Re: Dano Fab Distortion

I have one that my bandmate used for a while, it can sound cool in a fizzy gritty way in certain situations. I like it for $10 or something I paid.

Re: Dano Fab Distortion

The more I play this thing with single coils, the more I like it. I want to grab the $11.99 OD pedal now.

The Fab OD is a bit dark, and it's a bit fuzzy for an OD pedal, but very fun to play. It has TONS of boost, too, so you can hit the preamp hard, and if you crank the gain, it sustains for days.
