Got gas now. :(

I stopped into Guitar Center in Vegas Friday night. I thought I'd A/B a Gibson SG special and a Flying V.

I REALLY liked the SG. The midrange is very aggressive, and the cleans I found to be very sweet. Hoorah for 490t.

I was afraid it might sound too much like the V, but I was way off. Big difference. Much more throaty and aggressive. I realize now that it would actually sound quite a bit different from a LP.

And now, I want. GASSS!!!:yell:

Re: Darn you, GC Las Vegas!!

I know how you feel man. I've been wanting one of those faded brown SG's for a looooooong time.

Re: Darn you, GC Las Vegas!!

ive thought about picking one up myself, i used to have a sg with a pgn/c5 combo that was killer and ive been missing it lately. i think for the cash they are a great buy, go into guitarget, try out as many as they have and pick the best one. it may take an hour but its very much worth it. walk up to the counter give the man $600 bills (including tax) and wait for him to get the gig bag. never pay tag for anything except strings and picks.
but i am really gasing over a '59 guild thinline hollowbody.

Re: Darn you, GC Las Vegas!!

Just picked me one up this week from GC (payed less than tagged). SG Special, cherry red. I tried the Standard, but the 498t was too for what I was looking for, so I went for the cheaper Special (which has a 490t in the bridge; both have a 490r in the neck). The Standard was set up far better -- the Speical I ended up with needed major truss rod tweaking and intonation work.

It's great for that vintage overdriven Angus Young/Jay Farrar sound. My only gripe is that the pickups aren't well matched: with the amp set to a good neck sound, the bridge sounds thin; with the amp set to a good bridge sound, the neck sounds boomy. The neck is also a little sticky: I guess I'm spoiled by my satin finish Warmoth necks. It also took me a while to get used to playing it in the sitting position (the cutout aren't offset like a strat).

Overall, a pretty nice guitar for the dough. I've still got 25 days to decide if I want to keep it or not.
