Dave Funk's book

Just received Dave Funk's Tube Amp Workbook the other day, and it really is quite good! Anyone with an interest in modifying (or even builing) tube amps should really check it out: it's written in a fairly basic format, but there's no end of ideas that would probably otherwise take a lifetime to pick up.

I'm sure a lot of you here will already have read it, but for those who haven't, I thoroughly recommend it!

P.S. My next buy is going to be The Ultimate Tone... the soldering iron's plugged in as we speak!

Dave's book is useful but filled with opinions that are just that: opinions. Just don't treat everything he says as gospel...because his is just another view...especially his opinions about tone. I'm not saying the book is faulty...just that Dave is extremely opinionated and confident that his view is always the correct view. There's more than one way to do just about anything. I remember when Guitar Player did thier first reviews of the first generation of hand made guitar amps like the Dumble, Matchless, Kendrick...and Thunderfunk. They didn't pan the Thunderfunk, but they weren't all that excited about it either. Boy...did Dave write a angry letter to GP. They published it too. :D lew

I see your point. It's OK though, I think, as long as you don't just follow the one book. I'm trying to build up a collection of books, and I already have a few. That way you can get a balanced view.

You sound as though you disagree with much of it, though...!

No...as far as technical explanations I think it's mostly on the money. As far as what sounds good, I think some of Dave's ideas and preferences lead to a cleaner, tighter, more "Nashville" oriented tone than I and many blues/rockers prefer. Pedal Steel players probably love his stuff. :D I like Dave's book...mine's very dogeared from use. The large format 50's and 60's Fender chassis layouts and schematics are very well done. Lew
