Dave Meniketti (Y&T) Custom 5 and Jazz

I just visited the Dave Meniketti/Y&T website and noticed that Dave had a custom made Les Paul style guitar built for him. When it was done he went with a Custom 5 in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck. It's nice to see that Dave went with the Duncans especially since he is probably like us and had to pay for them himself. Dave rocks!

Here is link to the forum that has pics of the guitar. Just scroll half way down to the post by Dave.

Most of the guys here like the '59n with the C-5b. I've often thought that the Jazz would compliment the C-5 nicely.

I wonder if he ever lurks around here?

Re: Dave Meniketti (Y&T) Custom 5 and Jazz

I have the same pickups in my LP and it's a perfect match. I find it balances better with the C5 as opposed to a '59n which has too much bass.

Talk about an underated guitar player. There's no telling how many times I saw Y&T open up for other bands in the 80's and early 90's. That dude can jam!! I always recall him playing a Gibson Les Paul with a whammy on it.

Re: Dave Meniketti (Y&T) Custom 5 and Jazz

His main guitar was always a late 60's Gibson Les Paul Goldtop that was routed for humbuckers and refinsished in sunburst. He got it in the early 70's and still plays that guitar. It's really beat up looking but still sounds great. He had this new guitar made to take the place of his Les Paul on the road I would assume.

He's always been one of my favs and he still plays live a lot around where I live. He still has great tone and great chops!

Man , I got to see Y&T a lot from `82-`85 in the Bay Area. Dave used to play a Yamaha guitar onstage quite a bit in the early `80s. Great player and a great guy , I met him at a Borders book store of all paces about 4 yrs. ago and he was very cool. Someone correct me if I`m wrong but while Y&T was always known for being from San Francisco they actually started out in Hayward,Ca.

Man - I so wanted to say "underated" but you beat me too it! In Rock we trust is one of my personal favorites. Love the Y&T!!!

Re: Dave Meniketti (Y&T) Custom 5 and Jazz

I found this forum, trying to learn more about the Custom 5, before buying one.
To this day, it's still my favorite Duncan humbucker, especially for LP/Marshall.
I use C-5/59 in 2 Pauls and a McCarty. I can definitely see the Jazz N going perfectly with the C-5. I'm glad to see that more LP players are becoming hip to that combo.

Re: Dave Meniketti (Y&T) Custom 5 and Jazz

What about that (C5/JAzz) compared to the regular Custom/Jazz? Been thinking about that for a "loud" Dean CAddy...

Re: Dave Meniketti (Y&T) Custom 5 and Jazz

Is anyone using or tried a C5 bridge & Pearly Gates neck?

I need pickups for my PRS Swamp Ash Special and want something that's a step or three hotter then a '59 without being a distortion pickup for the bridge. The neck pickup should be clear & defined but still round enough to cop a Warren Hayne's vibe. I don't think I want a Jazz in this guitar...there's an upper midrange bump there that takes me a little too far away from the 'round' thing. There's a Vintage Rail in the center and that's staying.

I think the C-5/PG would be a top choice for you. I know the admin, Robert S has/had that combo in his #1 LP for years. I've heard the C-5 and PGn in my PRS McCarty, but not at the same time. They both sounded perfect to my ears. Since your PRS is ash/maple/trem, you may want to consider the CC/PG.
If it were my guitar, I think I'd start there. Those pickups will also go nicely with the HR middle pickup you have.

Yah, that's pretty much where I'm at. Either the CC/PG or '59-neck OR a C5/PG or '59 neck. I'm thinking that I'll buy whatever comes up used on the forum and start there lol.

Re: Dave Meniketti (Y&T) Custom 5 and Jazz

My only problem is that the C-5 and CC are high output and won't sound as big and full/open as lower output pickups in the same guitar. i like the lower outut options because you can use the amp to juice it up if you need to!:burnout:
