Dave Navarro last night

Last night a friend took me to the Roxy in LA for the Rockstar Series party. A couple of bands from last seasons contestants played adn then Dave Navarro and Panic Channel played.

Dave's rig was surprising. He used 2 JCM900 Model 4100 heads, and a bunch of Boss pedals (Delay, Octave), a wah and a Tubescreamer - nothing else. Very raw tone.

I was right in front of him and I leaned to his tech and asked about his amp choice, the tech said - yup, 900's, don't know why.

The singer, Steve plays some guitar (pretty well) and he used some Boss FX into a Bogner Shiva stack (He had another Shiva for backup). Chris Chaney had an Aguilar stack for Bass.

The last couple of songs went rough as the 900s started having some bad problems, and one might have had a fuse blow. They cut the last tune for an acoustic number, and Dave read his tech the riot act.

Still, good fun all the same.

I really went to check out the women and hang out... this will end my guitar geekness for the day.

Dave has been using the same set up for a long time now...I, not sure why he likes the JCM 900's so much but he really digs them!

HOw are they as a band? Also, how was the materal???

Did Dave still make the mistake of going shirtless and thus looking like a human Pez dispenser?

I don't think the girls in the crowd mind that one bit... :laugh2:

Well, as far as MAterial - it's very alternative rock, in the old Jane's sense of interesting changes mixed with raw Zep-type riffs (that's how I think of Jane's). Compared to most "alt" bands back in the day, they were into Marshalls and Guitar solos.

The sound and feel was vintage Jane's, drenched in delays. I thought the singer (Steve Isaacs, no?) played really well, but i felt the sex appeal was hotter when he sang sans guitar. With all the delays, it still sounded quite full to me. The vocals are very cutting in he vein of Soundgarden, but the music isn't as de-tuned. That's how I would describe it.

I liked it. It was a hard night with tech probs, and it was really more about the reality show, and fans of one of last season's people than it was about Panic Channel. Good fun all the same, decent handful of hot women.

To answer Zhang, he does go shirtless, waxed, tight pants, tats. Girls seems to love him quite a lot. He definitely is wild on stage. It hink wihtout the amp probs, and had he had a wireless, he would have been wilder.

Re: Dave Navarro last night

In the pictures I've seen, he's either got a small body or a giant head, hence the Pez dispenser thing.

I'll agree there is kind of a Pagey vibe in the rhythm riffs of Jane's stuff.

Yeah, but they would've had the same reaction if Sam Kinison took his shirt off. He's rich and famous. The end.

Re: Dave Navarro last night

Dave's last album - the amps sounded huge - probably that bogner uberschall...much different sound than the other albums which sounded great too, but definitely had the marshall quality...

Re: Dave Navarro last night

Dave doesn't changed his gear a whole lot. In Jane's addiction he used Ibanez RG guitars, then switched to PRS, and played the life out of that white PRS. He's used basically the same JCM900 amps and pedals since his Jane's Addiction days.

Watch- JCM 900's will become popular in another 2 years once they're thought of as "Vintage". I'm looking for a 50 watter.

Re: Dave Navarro last night

i believe the older JCM900s are better sounding.
And the looks of it gives others ther impression of "where did you get that from?"

by that logic they would have gone insane if Bill Gates stripped onstage:chairfall

Re: Dave Navarro last night

I mean this only as observation, but Navarro is still in amazing shape. Plays shirtless, and wears the tight pants. You can hear women say,"He's, hot; He's sexy" all the time in LA, esp at that show.

BTW Navarro and Carlos Santana were the reason I got into PRS's to begin with. They used to be somewhat underground.

Re: Dave Navarro last night

^ I hope to get to the local rock star level and get all the chicks 10 years from now too!

Re: Dave Navarro last night

the Jane's Addiction album "Nothing's Shocking" is a must have and is a great starter album - good stuff! :) I think I like Janes addiction a wee bit more than Red Hot Chili Peppers (Dave has been in both bands)

Re: Dave Navarro last night

'nothing shocking' and 'ritual lo habitual' from janes addiction are both nothing short of mindblowing IMHO. these days we take alternative music for granted. bands meld a lot of different genres, blah blah blah. but when 'nothing shocking' came out back in 1988 there really was nothing like it. heavy, very trippy, very sexual, somewhat spacey even (see 'summertime rolls').

if you like both those cds get their first release which is a live one. i think it's just called janes addiction. very raw. i was pretty disappointed with their last release, 'strays.' i thought production-wise is sounded fantastic. and as happydude said the guitars sound MASSIVE. but the songs were only so-so. ironically my favorite song was 'suffer some', which was actually written by the orginal lineup back in the late 80s but never released. orginal bassist eric avery and singer perry farrell wrote pretty much all the songs for 'nothing shocking' and 'ritual...' in a very short period of time. i think avery was really the glue in that band. he's one of my favorite bassists.

sorry about hijacking this thread. janes is one of my favorite bands of all time and navarro is one of my favorite guitarists.

Re: Dave Navarro last night

oh yea, if you are interested in navarro you should check out his instructional video. he goes over a lot of his equipment, effects, guitars, breaks down some janes songs and some chili peppers songs. it's from the era he was in the chili peppers and there is a brief section of him jamming with the band. shirt off of course! the guy who is interviewing him is kind of hilarious in an un-intentional way. he has got the hugest feathered mullet possibly of all time. you look at him and navarro side by side and you think, these 2 guys do NOT hang out together. :)

Not anymore! They just split up, it was on the news this morning. Something about there being too much pressure for her being married to a man that's prettier than she is. :laugh2:

Cheers,

CJ
