David Gilmour strat pickups

Re: David Gilmour strat pickups

In what period?
In the 90's, maybe the 80's, apparently he used EMG's, I believe the SA model IIRC.
Earlier, I've read he used a vintage Strat, with Fender vintage Strat pickups.

I have heard some claim that while he may use guitars with EMG's onstage, in the studio it's always a vintage Strat or Tele with those old Fender pickups.

Re: David Gilmour strat pickups

im pretty sure hes stopped using emg's. at the last pink floyd set i saw (live 8) it looked like some vintage strat pickups. and when ive seen vids of him in the studio, its been the same famous black strat with vintage pickups.

from what ive heard, he his strat set up so that he can turn on his neck pickup whenever, so he can make any combo of pickups. i think at live 8 he had the bridge and neck on together (at least for comfortably numb)

I think that's true. I think that's a big part of his tone, certainly in some songs.

He did also use Tele's to record. I have no idea for which songs/which solos. But with a Tele he would have had that neck and bridge single coil combo available too.

In my efforts to get a tone like Gilmour's (I think some of his recorded guitar tones are the most beautiful I've ever heard), I recently wired one of my Strat-style guitars so that I can flip a switch and get the neck/bridge combination. I also installed a Twang Banger at the bridge to get a more Tele style tone from the bridge pickup. The neck pickup on that guitar is an APS-1. With this setup, I think I've come real close to nailing the tone I've been after for a long time. It sounds very much like some of Gilmour's pre-1980 recorded tones.

The ones in his black Strat, I believe are Fender singles that Seymour had rewound, and they tried a bunch til they found the "right" ones.

Yeah, I've done the same mod after seeing his, and I love the bridge + neck combo. It 's nice because you can still have two tone controls this way - but of course blender wiring accomplishes much the same thing.

I think the reason for those EMGs was to avoid noise from dimmers and lighting used on stage...hence in the studio there was no need for them.

Re: David Gilmour strat pickups

In the late 60s, Gilmour used a late-60s white Strat with stock pickups.

By the early 70s, he was using a 1970 (?) black Strat with pickups provided -- and later, rewound -- by Mr. Duncan (as someone mentioned previously). In 1977, he installed a DiMarzio FS-1 in the bridge. Around 1980, he took out the DiMarzio and put back the single-coil he'd been using previously. This black guitar was his main guitar for a long time, and he seems to have pulled it out of the closet for his most recent tour as well.

When he really got into the solo stuff in the early 80s, Gilmour started using a red Strat fitted (at some point) with EMG-SA single-coils.

I've also heard that he's used (or uses) Kinman Woodstock Regulars on one of his Strats.

I find it interesting that much of what he recorded in the early years involved Strats with stock pickups.

Yeah, he's pretty much done with the EMGs...for now. You never know when he's going to go back to some earlier tone. They're all great tones -- this is Gilmour we're talking about -- so he's got a nice palette to choose from.

Chris Kinman makes pickup harness sets with a tone knob that allows you to dial in as much of the neck pickup as you want in any of the five positions. I've got this on my Strat, and the options are fantastic. Getting that great Tele bridge-and-neck tone comes in very handy on a Strat. It's so cool it should be a standard on Strats. But then, I love Teles enough to want that tone a lot of the time. With the right amount of drive, I can coax very Hendrix-esque tones out of that combination. Getting all three pickups going at once is sweet!
