Days of Wine & Roses

Some of you probably remember me posting this tune before, but that time I was on bass and playing with a trio. This is me on guitar with an Aebersold BT.

I just decided to record this to get some criticism. I'm going to be auditioning for a fine arts center, for my senior year of high school, in 2 weeks and this is the tune I'm going to play. It's still a little rough around the edges and there were some obvious mistakes - so I still have some fine tuning to do. But any criticism would help and don't be afraid to be completely honest. This was played with a Stromberg Monterey and a Super Reverb RI fyi. Thanks guys,

Steven

Re: Days of Wine & Roses

The sound is a bit too mellow for my taste but other than that it's pretty awesome! Some fast runs would be great but I know how difficult it is!

You got my respect, do you want to study jazz guitar/music?

Over the Eb7#11 (the second chord) you can play Bb-melodic minor and you get a mixolydian #11 sound, which sound really cool!

I agree about the tone - it sounded different in the room. I guess the mic didn't pick up the tone the way I wanted it to.

I am planning on studying jazz in college.

And thanks for the suggestion, I definitely need to brush up on the minor modes. But I actually don't play a dominant chord on the second chord - I play the Eb7 as an Ebmaj7. As far as I know it's a more common change. Your suggestion would serve the same purpose in the BbmM7-Eb7#11 change in bars 7-8, though.

Just curious - is there any particular reason you called it Mixo #11? I think you're probably the first person I've heard say that instead of Lydian dominant.

Thanks for your comments.

Re: Days of Wine & Roses

hehe, I play a dominant seven chord there :)

Oh sorry, it's the german description of the mode :) But it's the same thing.

You know already some cool stuff, that's really cool!

Re: Days of Wine & Roses

It was very nice, I actually liked the mellow sounds. I've been trying to get more into some jazz phrasing.
