DD in LP opinions

I am thinking of treating myself to the DD for the bridge of my lp stnd
I have a 59 in the neck and to me that sounds wonderful.
I didn't like the JB, too bright for my taste.
The styles I like are 70/80 british rock.
I believe the DD has plenty of low end chunk which is what I,m looking for (the low end in the 59 is probably what I love about that pup)
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Cheers all

Re: DD in LP opinions

I really liked the sound of mine, had plenty of bottom and sounded awesome for rock, but I just didn't like the clean tones on them, so I am replacing them with APII's.

I got 2 up for grabs now in the traders room. :spam: A zebra and a double black.

Re: DD in LP opinions

You might want to consider the Custom instead of the DD, it has more of a "classic rawk" feel, and in my experience, more actual fat bottom than the DD. If you like the '59 you'll like the Custom.

Re: DD in LP opinions

If you don't like the brightness of the JB, you're probably not going to like the brightness of a ceramic magnet PU either. I've tried a few different ceramics (including the DD & Custom) in various guitars, and its always the same, too bright & harsh. Same with the JB. Tried to like them, but...

I recommend a C5. It has the raw power you're looking for. The A5 magnet gives it plenty of low end. I've got a C5 in a LP Std & it has great tones.

You talk about the JB and DD being bright and you recommend the C5????? Duncan recommends this for Dark guitars. The C5 is on the upper end of the brightness scale for sure. It isnt harsh like the JB can be but, it sure is bright in most guitars. If a JB is OK but, that high mid/harshness gets on your nerves, the C5 is a good choice if you still want a bright pickup.

For 70's/80's rock, a Custom will serve you well and be plenty versatile. A custom works great in a LP for almost all styles of music. With a slight turn of the volume or tone, it can do alot of stuff.

I hate to say I'm with Odie, because that can be taken in so many ways, most of them wrong...

But I agree with Custom. DD will be way too bright for your ears also. Super Distortion is probably the sound you really want, but if you are sticking with SD, go with the Custom.

Yeah, a Dimarzio super distortion in a LP does 70's/80's hard rock to a "T". The custom does very well with it too. The super D is about what everyone played back then.

Re: DD in LP opinions

Custom = Duncan Custom
CC, SH-11= Custom Custom (a VERY different sound, A2 magnet)
C5= Custom with an A5 magnet.

Re: DD in LP opinions

I love the DD in my #1 Les Paul.....it's been there for 18 years and it's never comming out! I've tried other pups in my other Les Pauls but I keep comming back to the DD.

I say go for it!

Re: DD in LP opinions

DD's sound pretty much the same in all guitars. For years I used them in every thing, when I was younger. Big George Lynch fan. It made no difference which guitar I picked up, they all sounded the same. If you want to hear what your guitar actully sounds like, go lower in the output range. My current guitars have distinct voices.

Re: DD in LP opinions

You probably want a custom BUT it does have more treble than a JB. It just has a much bigger, tighter low end and is more balanced in the midrange.

Re: DD in LP opinions

The mid factor is what makes the JB seem so bright IMO.

And I'm sticking with the DD in my #1 LP!!!!Of course, I also have a SuperD in LP#2 and custom in my caddy....easy for me to say.

I think the real issue is you need more guitars bro....If I could have only one, it'd probably be the custom, with super D a close second.

Re: DD in LP opinions

How compressed is the DD compared to the custom?? I found the custom quite compressed in my Les Paul and as a result favour the C5

+1. IMO, it's not worth having a high end guitar if the pickups are just going to mask its natural sound.

WTF is this little dancing thing? I like it a lot.

Re: DD in LP opinions

Well I would like to keep the sound of the guitar itself so I guess that knocks the high outputs on the head.
I tried the 59 neck in the bridge position to get an idea but didn't like it, is there much difference between the bridge and neck version.
I have put my jazz neck in the bridge before and really liked that. I might be starting to answer my own question here and end up with the Jazz bridge.

Not much difference. If you like the Jazz neck in the bridge, get a jazz bridge and me done with it.
