DD not bright enough?

Hello everybody,

after reading through this great forum for quite a while, I decided to put a mayhem set (SH6B&N) into my all mahogany guitar.
And although this was a huge step in the right direction, I am not 100% satisfied. I like the sound very much, but it seems (like someone else descripted it in some other thread) like there is a blanket lying over your speakers (or maybe I am simply growning deaf?).
I read about unsoldering the tonepot, which I immediately did, and which I found a must for the DD, because it improves its sound very much, but I'm still not completely satisfied. Should I change the volumepot to 1M? Or is there another pickup with similar sound and output, but a little more "aggressiveness" or "bite"? OK, the guitar is all mahogany and has a glued-in neck, but if played unplugged it doesn't sound dull or dark at all.

Any suggestions?

Re: DD not bright enough?

Full Shred or JB maybe? I think they should brighten your guitar up... but I don't know if they'll make your guitar more "aggressive"

Re: DD not bright enough?

what amp are you using? crank the mids.

I can't see how the DD is muddy at all... I thought it was a f*cking bright pickup.

No, no, it doesn't sound muddy at all. I know that the DD is commonly described as being (very) bright, but in my guitar it isn't and exactly this makes me wonder.

Re: DD not bright enough?

What guitar are they in?

What about the electrics too (pots), if they are not already, you should probably swap them for 500k's, that will help...

*Edit* - Welcome to the forum too!

It's a SE by PRS (all mahogany, glued-in neck, stoptail)

Pots are 500k, Vol only, Tone not connected

Thank you.

Re: DD not bright enough?

All Mahogany + Glued in neck is perfect candidate for an SH-5 custom in the bridge.

Re: DD not bright enough?

If your volume pots are 250K go for 500K or 1M.

If they are already 500K, Full Shred or EMG?

Re: DD not bright enough?

Perhaps you should try to put some allen head pole pieces in your p-u , it make the sound much brighter , it's gaging for harmonics .
The dimarzio or black seymour ones , it is a very easy change .
