i am going to replace the ceramic bar magnet in my old school DD and try either a alnico II or V i figure a V will get a JB like tone but an alnico II could be interesting smooth it out a little tame the highs and add a little sustain this is a sh-7 seymourizer neck 12.7k i'm going to use it in the bridge since duncan doesn't make anything in this range as a bridge pick up with a 59neck

I would love to hear how it sounds with the magnet swap. I would love it if duncan made a pickup in that range.

I've done a mag swap on the TB-6; in the end, I went back to the big badarse ceramic magnet.

Although, I DID dig the tone of an A5 for quite a while; it seemed a little smoother, a little sweeter, but I missed the balls of the oversized ceramic. Never tried an A2, but give the A5 a try; I think you won't be dissapointed

It will be interesting to see how this works out. I have a DD neck also, that I'm thinking of installing in the bridge of an HSS axe. I'll leave the magnet alone, but I'll still be curious to see how this works for you.

Re: DD with alnico V or II

I tried swaps the DDn when I had it. Most noticable between A5 and Ceramic was the change from hot and bright to slightly cooler and bassier, but with more glass on top. Had more a vintage tone. A2 was just dark, lol.

Ultimately, I thought the DD in it's stock form really sounded best. Not to mention swapping mags in that particular pup is a bit of a pain because you have to fiddle with spacers and alter the height of the coils, etc.
