Dean USA VMNT Experience

I'll try to post pictures in the coming days, but i just wanted to talk about the dean vmnt guitar i recently purchased. I was a bit hesitant to go with a Dean, given i have heard some problems with quality control in some of their more common/import models. I already owned an import vmnt rust in peace model, and it has had some electronic issues on and off. For those not familiar with those guitars, they're V's and come stock with livewire pickups. Livewire pickups are currently my FAVORITE humbucking pickups, so when making the purchase of a USA guitar, i was thrilled to know the one i was getting came stock with them and wouldn't require any mods in that department. Anyway, the build quality of this guitar was extremely pleasing and surpassed my expectations. The thing is just awesome. To anyone considering a dean USA vmnt guitar, i would not hesitate to pull the trigger. They're expensive but I consider this guitar just as good as my other higher end guitars. The thing is absolutely perfect.

With that being said, I will now comment briefly on the livewire pickups. Prior to trying these pickups a couple years ago, the only active pickups i really had experience with were EMG 707s. I didn't hate those pickups but was not thrilled. I considered them ok but a bit of a one trick pony. Due to that, i never really had too much of an interest in trying other active pickup options. I just thought they were not my thing. Well, when i tried the livewires, i was proven wrong. They shimmer and have a lot more overtones compaired to the 707s (at least i think so). I would describe the sound as high-res, and they respond extremely well to dynamics. In fact, they make legato sound so much better than any of my other pickups, it's beggining to redefine the techniques i choose to use on the instrument. They're hot and focused, yet still organic sounding. If you have the opportunity, you should really give them a try. I LOVE them for distorted tones. Like the emg's, still a bit sterile in clean contexts.

Happy you like them (and the guitar)! If you are not a member of the Dean Owners Association, you should join (there is a forum and a Facebook page).

Re: Dean USA VMNT Experience

Glad to hear you're happy with your new guitar! I'm currently trying to work a trade for an import Angel of Deth V :)

I'm a huge fan of the Dave Mustaine LiveWires, as well. Incredibly overlooked among today's actives. They are more passive-esque than Blackouts, older EMGs, etc. and have a very controllable output level...hot, but very usable for styles outside of just metal.

Welcome!!! Those inlays are sick! Cool review on the pups too! My one experience with EMGs hasn't had me itching to try more actives, but I should try some others.

Thanks guys. Yeah, those pickups are really cool and worth giving a try. I don't want to lead you into thinking they're much more versatile than the emgs, because in my opinion, they are not. I just really like the way they respond to dynamics, compared to the emgs. They def shine in situations with a lot of saturation, and are not the type of thing i'd reach for to obtain good transparent tones. I love 'em for what they are, though. Totally my fav humbuckers but serve a specific purpose.

Yeah, livewires are def my fav humbuckers. Last time i was jamming, i put it on the clean channl to make s loop to jam over. I need to say, it actually sounded good on clean. The guitar i used to have emg707s in would sound so lifeless on that channel. The livewires seem to have a shimmering quality about them. I love 'em!
