Decent price for a 1983 MIJ Fender 'Squire Series' JV Tele?

Hey guys.

As some of you may know, I've been after a Tele for a while and had pretty much decided on a Baja Tele as I've heard nothing but good things about them and for the price, they have an awesome spec.

Every so often I pick up the areas free ads paper to see if there's anything interesting in it, and yesterday there was an ad for a Fender JV Telecaster with 2 piece ash body, 1 piece maple neck, nitro finish and is Open To Offers. I spoke to the guy and he says it's a MIJ 1983 Fender Squier Series Tele and that he was looking for offers around £500. He mentioned he'd probably take £400 to sell it quick.

I've had a quick look into these guitars and they appear to be very well received by alot of people, and may even start to be collectable.

I've never played 1 of these myself, and thought I'd ask if this sounds like a decent enough price or not, as I can't really find much out about their worth in £s :)

Thanks.

Craig

It sounds like a good deal to me. I'm not sure how the dollar and the pound exchange right now...but if I found a made in Japan Squier Tele from the early-mid '80's for $400-$600 (US), I'd be very interested!

Not a bad price Craig. Excellent instruments...

80's fender are some of the best especially the re-issue and custom models.

Hey guys.

I spoke to the guy again earlier and had secured the guitar for £400 to go and fetch it tomorrow.

I got a text message an hour or so later saying sorry but someone had rung up and had offered £550 for the Tele so he was letting them have it.

Looks like it's back to the drawing board! :(

Doh...£550 is more what I'd expect them to fetch, but they (and similar models) come up fairly regularly. The E Series (just post-JV) are also excellent and tend to go for less; I picked up an E Series Tele for £400 which is superb, so keep looking...

I have an 'E Series' Fender Jap Strat and it's a great guitar, especially as I got it for £200 :)

I really should finish routing it for a neck humbucker so I can start using it again.

i have little idea what the going price for these would be in England... but mint condition mid 80's Japan Squiers strats and teles sell for around $500-$700 here in Canada.... but once in a while you can find them for $200 if you get lucky!

Re: Decent price for a 1983 MIJ Fender 'Squire Series' JV Tele?

£550 isn't that more than a $1000?!
Don't get me wrong a friend of mine has one and it's a great guitar but £550 seems tome like he overpaid...

We tend to pay a lot over here - if a guitar is $1,000 in the US it's often £1,000 in the UK...

£500... English pounds?

That's about $1000 USD.

Waaaaaay too much for that.

Maybe $400 USD...

Even that's inching towards Tokai & MIJ "Fender" money... those go for $400-700 all day long over here.

Re: Decent price for a 1983 MIJ Fender 'Squire Series' JV Tele?

I love my MIJ Fender Squier Strats, but remember that most (all?) of the 80's MIJ Fender Squier Teles do not have string-through-body bridges like a "real" Tele would have. The strings are top mounted and not mounted through the back of the guitar. That changes the tone and feel of the guitar significantly - and for the worse.

And the pickups in those Squiers are not very good - I always replace them with Duncans or Bardens if the guitar is keeper otherwise.

Yeah, I'd noticed on some of the Teles from that era I've seen on Ebay.

My only other Tele is a cheapie 'Toploader' with a Broadcaster style pickup in the bridge and that's it.

Unless I got something like a Baja or a Lite Ash Tele, I think I'd probably put a set of BKP Blackguards in it straight away anyway! :)

IIRC, Merchant Music are doing a reduced price on a Baja Tele. I'm sure I saw an ad in TG...

Thanks for the heads up mate.

Maybe ;)

It's either a Baja, a Lite Ash or I've also found what looks to be a good deal on a HW1 Texas Tele, IF I can get over the colour :D
