Define Fuzz

Re: Define Fuzz

the boxy square wave is from a clean amp, the creamy fuzz tends to be from a fuzz into a pushed amp

Re: Define Fuzz

The reason fuzz is not used in (most)metal is because it is really loose, distortion is much tighter.

I think it boils down to the attack of the notes. Unless you're in a stoner or doom band, metal usually requires a sharp attack. A fuzz pedal will "blunt" out the top end, "box" the mids, and loosen the bottem end. They're not effective at all in creating that stop/start wall of death sound however are great for psychedelic playing.

Re: Define Fuzz

"American Woman's" solo is really fuzzy. Not for a lot of folks today. It is not a "tight" distortion that sings.

Anyone agree with that? Kinda hard to put into words, lol.

Even better, get the Hendrix compilation album, " :BLUES ".

I am listenning to it right now !
Most of the chords & strumming (not just the lead/solo parts) are drenched in FUZZ - my fav. Hendrix album, and i have more than 10 of 'em !!!

A VERY EASY WAY TO HEAR THE EFFECT OF FUZZ IN STRUMMING !

(and for the Hendrix fans on here, if you do not have this album, WHY NOT ??? )

Another great album that is also DRENCHED in Fuzzy-goodness, is the Live album of ZZ Top, " XXX".

Needless to say, this is alsao my fav. ZZ Top album by a mile !
Get this one too then !

(hell, it even says on the side of this CD :

. . . " * DRUMS * BASS * AND * FUZZY GUITAR "

Man, i love FUZZ !!!

Funny ol' me . . .

. . . i love OD & Fuzz, but really dislike any straight-forward DISTORTION - weird !

Re: Define Fuzz

Hmm, that's interesting because i always thought of distortion as the ultimate heavyness. If fuzz is so heavy in comparison, why do metal bands use distortion? Why is there a metal zone but no metal fuzz, is what im saying i guess.

Easy mate !!!

Because pedal co's are slow to catsh on !!!
The whole GRUNGE movement was almost over before Boss came out with their two fuzz-boxes. You can say, "too little , wayyyy too late !".

BUT i have good new for ya !

The good folks at EHX just unleached the "METALMUFF " !

http://www.ehx.com/ehx2/images/e_metalmuff.jpg

The clips sound good !
But for me, myideal fuzz is more like the tones that you get from, EHX's, the BIG MUFF, Maxon's D&S, ProCo's You Dirty Rat, Effector 13's "kP".

WARNING :

Most of the pedlas that Devi produce from her co. "Effector 13", is
Extreme Fuzz noisemachines - WAYyyyy OTT - do check look into her site, be be warned !

Her new'est pedal, the "Shoegazer" is also very sweet !

MAN I LOVE FUZZ !

Oh, before i forget !

If you want to hear a " Big Muff " max'ed on a CD, listen to ANY "MUDHONEY" album !

Tracks like, "Flat out Phucked", "Touch me i'm sick", and "In & out of grace" comes to mind !

Another installment of my 2 cents !

Re: Define Fuzz

Definitely. I've got a late 60's Marshall Supa Fuzz, and you just can't use it for metal. At least I can't.
When you hear it, you'll see what we're talking about. When I wanna do some Jimi with my strat though, that pedel sings. Palm muting for example: my interpretation would be this--with distortion or overdrive it will be powerful and tight. The fuzz is perfect for what they used to call acid rock and things like that. Hendrix, Pink Floyd, some Led Zeppelin or whatever your mind can cook up with it. I think Kravitz uses a fuzz on a lot of stuff too.

- long live Classic Rock !!!
