Definition needed: chorus, break, hook . . .

All my songs lack "this". And I just commented on it, once again, in someone else's thread. I'm not sure what the correct terminology is.

If its a vocal, its easy to identify a "chorus", but within an instrumental, what do you call it when you break from the main direction?

Any and all definitions welcome. :laugh2:

hmmm, not sure I totally smell whatcha steppin' in.
Is it a variation of the main theme? (i.e. Theme & variation) Does it act like a bridge or an interlude? Maybe a refrain? Is the 1st section fairly wrapped up, songwise, and now this part acts like a "2nd movement", (to borrow a classical term)?

Jazzers call a 2nd section a "B section" which differenciates it from what they call the "A section". I tend to use this terminology a lot.

well......simply put, a chorus is the part thats normally the catchiest and most repeated part of the song. a break could also be reffured to as a bridge, which is normally a change from the general direction of the song (could also be a lead up to something, such as a solo, or a solo could be a bridge). a hook is basically that catchy riff or lyric that makes teh song memorable.
