Degaussed magnets?

Hi all,

In tinkering and pickup swapping I pulled and old APS-1 out of the parts drawer. It sounds- just lame and dead although it reads 6K resistance. Considering that this pickup was stuck to a screwdriver for... a while by accident, I’m thinking it might be degassed. Would that result in a total killing of the top end, or have my tastes changed and the APS-1 is just really pulled back on the highs?

Thanks!

Re: Degaussed magnets?

the aps1 is still a fairly bright pup, not sharp as an a5 single coil, but still bright. its possible its degaussed or maybe your ears/tastes changed. if it was degaussed the tone would change but it wouldnt totally kill the high end

Thanks,

When compared to a CS 69 in one Strat and a Suhr v60lp in another the APS-1 sounds like the presence and treble controls go from 5 to 2... perhaps I should just move on to an SSL-1 as everything else in the guitar is A5.

Re: Degaussed magnets?

that might not be a bad idea. a2 high end is quite different than a5 in similar pups. i tend not to like to mix magnets in a guitar for the most part

Re: Degaussed magnets?

The pickup would have needed to have been stored next to another magnet to degauss, not something ferrous that merely relayed it's magnetic field. Magnets in humbucker have been proven to keep their charge for many decades......Even original PAF magnets have shown very little to no degaussing effect even in constant contact with the slugs and screws.

Re: Degaussed magnets?

You pretty much have to be deliberate to degauss a magnet.

Maybe you have suffered accumulated hearing damage, resulting in some loss of hearing on the high end. And/or maybe it's a different guitar, different setup, and/or your tastes have changed. Could be almost any explanation except the mags degaussing.
